Human papilloma is a virus that passes from skin to skin contact and out of 100 varieties of human papilloma 40 varieties pass through sexual contact and is capable of affecting your genitals, mouth and throat. According to the centre of disease control and prevention HPV is the commonest sexually transmitted disease. The viral DNA of human papillomavirus results in infectious warts. The transmission of this virus can be through skin to skin contact, through fragments of shed skin and can be encouraged by trauma and moisture.
Causes
Human papillomavirus infections can occur through a cut, abrasion or small tear in skin. The virus is transferred mainly through skin to skin contact. Genital HPV infections are contracted through sextual intercourse and anal sex. If there is presence of genital warts then it can also get transferred from skin to skin contact.
The upper respiratory HPV infection may result from oral sex. If a female is pregnant and is having genital warts then possibly her child can get the infection at the time of delivery. Rarely this infection can cause non cancerous growth in the baby’s voice box.
Symptoms of Human Papillomavirus Infection
In most cases the body’s immune system detects HPV infection before it creates warts. The site for the appearance of warts depends on the kind of HPV involved. Most commonly warts appear initially as smooth skin coloured papules. As they enlarge their surfaces, they become irregular and hyperkeratotic, producing the typical warty appearance. They usually occur on hands but may also often be seen on the face and genitalia. Occurrence of multiple warts are common.
- Genital Warts: These appear as flat lesions, small cauliflower like bumps and tiny stem-like protrusions. In women they appear mostly on the vulva but also tend to occur near anus, cervix or vagina. In men genital warts appear on the top of penis, around the scrotum and also around anus. This type of warts are mostly painless though they itch or feel tender.
- Common Warts: These warts appear as raised bumps, rough on touch and occur on fingers and hands. Common warts are simple but not slight and also are painful or susceptible to injury or bleeding.
- Plantar Warts: Plantar warts are characterized by a rough surface, protruding only slightly from the skin and surrounded by a horny collar. They appear on heels and balls of feet.
