Morbius Syndrome- Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment With Herbal Remedies
Abstract
Cranial nerves are a part of our nervous system that controls different body functions, movements, and activities. Any deformity of these nerves causes a direct impact on their associated function. Morbius syndrome is one such disorder that causes defects in cranial nerves (Mostly 6th and 7th cranial nerves). It was named after the German neurologist, Paul Julius Moebius. Morbius syndrome is found in 20 children per million live births. It is a non-progressive disorder and has no definite cause. In this article, we will discuss the possible causes, symptoms, and treatment options for Morbius syndrome in modern and Ayurveda.
Introduction
Morbius syndrome is a rare birth defect that occurs due to the underdevelopment of cranial nerves that can be sixth, seventh, eleventh, or twelfth cranial nerves. In this syndrome, the muscles that control facial expressions and eye movements are affected and do not work properly. Certain drugs can show the side effects of Morbius syndrome. This can also be defined as paralysis of facial muscles. Certain types of mutations in genes cause Morbius syndrome in your child. The child with Morbius syndrome is unable to move his face and also has undeveloped limbs or chest regions. It is a persistent syndrome from birth and is non-progressive (does not increase or worsen with time).
Ayurvedic Aspect
According to Ayurveda, it is a Vataj Vyadhi. The nerves related issues arise in the body due to the imbalance of Vata dosha either due to its aggravation or due to the aavaran (overlapping) of vata dosha. The vata dosha aggravates the newborn child due to the vatvardhak and wrong diet plus lifestyle followed by the mother during the pregnancy. The nervous system can be correlated to ‘Srotas’ in Ayurveda. Aggravated vata dosha blocks the strotas channels and causes hindrance in the normal flow of blood and other essential fluids through them to the body. Balancing the vata dosha is the main focus to treat such disorders. The abnormal symptoms of Morbius syndrome (Vataj vyadhi) make it difficult for the parents and the child to live a meaningful life. Therefore, Ayurveda has come to increase the standard quality of life by managing the abnormal symptoms of the vyadhi with herbal remedies.
