Moisturizing on a regular basis will help in controlling the symptoms too and local applications are quite effective for controlling the There are many types of dermatitis among which one is Phytophotodermatitis about which we will discuss in this article along with its Ayurvedic management.
INTRODUCTION
Phytophotodermatitis is one type of dermatitis, especially contact dermatitis. Let’s see the meaning of Phytophotodermatitis by splitting three words – phyto means plant, photo means sunlight and dermatitis means inflammation. This condition occurs when certain chemicals of the plant come in contact with the skin and leads to skin inflammation on exposure to sunlight. This type of dermatitis is less common than the other contact dermatitis types. Generally the symptoms of this condition alleviate on their own but sometimes a condition becomes so serious that it is to be managed by certain medications
OME FACTS ABOUT PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS
- It is a reaction from plant chemicals.
- This wosen when exposed to sunlight.
- Chemical which generally causes this is furocoumarins
- Symptoms occur in periods, maybe 1 episode may be more than 2
CAUSES OF PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS
This condition mainly occurs when the skin surface is exposed to furocoumarins, a type of chemical which is found over the surface of plants. This chemical is activated by UVA rays, rays coming via the photosynthesis process. After the skin is exposed to this chemical and after its activation a reaction occurs in the epidermis (outer layer of the skin). Following are the plants which can cause this condition
- Celery
- Carrots
- Citrus fruits
- Wild parsley
- Figs
- Wild dill
- Wild parsnips
SYMPTOMS OF PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS
Symptoms of this condition depend upon the reaction cycle. First of all a person affected from it experiences a blister patch on the skin. These blisters are irregular in shape and associated with itching. Whenever the skin is exposed towards the plant chemical these blisters occur on the skin. Most common areas that may be affected are hands, arms and legs. Other things that occur around the blisters are patches in the form of streaks and drips. There is itching and inflammation in the skin with redness. Once these symptoms go away it leads to dark pigmentation at the place of blisters. This pigmentation is known as post-inflammatory pigmentation and the same remains for several weeks to several months.
DIAGNOSIS OF PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS
As we discussed earlier many cases are resolved on their own but some cases become too serious and need an investigation too. Then there is a need to visit a doctor for proper diagnosis and management. This condition may often be confused with various others such as sun allergies, sunburn, poison ivy, hive, poison oak so it is better to get this condition differentiated from others in a timely. Usually the condition is evaluated with the help of physical examination and a proper history taking.
AYURVEDIC VIEW OF PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS
This condition has no direct correlation as per Ayurveda. It involved agantuj karana as a cause which includes niryas janya twak dushti. Which means the skin gets affected by secretion of a plant’s chemical. When the niryas (chemical of plant) comes in contact with twacha (skin) it causes pitta and rakta dushti which leads to various symptoms. Symptoms experienced by a person include: Pidika (blisters), shotha (inflammation), kandu (itching) and hyperpigmentation after disappearance of formed pidika. These symptoms get worse after a person is exposed to direct sunlight. For managing this condition, the line of treatment includes rakta shodhana and pitta shamaka chikitsa. For this Planet Ayurveda provides you with the following remedies. So let’s have a look!!!!
