Bibhitaki (Terminalia Bellirica)
Bibhitaki or Baheda is one among three fruits of Triphala. It is a brownish-grey colored large deciduous tree of up to 30 meters height, found throughout India like – Punjab, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is also found in the lower hills of Southeast Asia and plains.
This plant is composed of various chemical compounds such as egalic acid, galic acid, galloyl, glucose, chebugalic acid, oxalic acid, sitosterol, protein, tannins, glucose, galactose, fructose, ramnose, mannitol, and chebulasic acid.

Meaning
This verse explains about various synonyms and properties of Bibhitaki. Synonyms are – Aksh, bhootvaas, karshfala, kaliyugalya and kalidrum. It is astringent in taste but changes to sweet taste after digestion, hot in potency, has cooling effects and pacifies Pitta and Kapha dosha. Seed kernel is astringent in taste, easy to digest, narcotic, used to cure thirst, pacifies kapha and vata dosha and used to induce purgation therapy. Bibhitaki is useful in cough, eye problems, hair problems, worm infestation, voice hoarseness and purgation therapy.
Health benefits and uses of Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica)
1. In Infections
This herb is very useful to fight with various infections due to its anti-bacterial property.
2. In Hair Growth
This herb is having a rejuvenating property which makes it helpful in hair growth.
3. In Respiratory Problems
It shows great results in managing respiratory problems like – Asthma, cough, common cold, hoarseness of voice and blood in sputum.
4. In inflammation
It shows great results in inflammatory conditions like Rheumatism. The seed oiL or paste of fruit is used for external application.
5. In Skin Problems
Seed oil is very useful in treating various skin diseases, in imparting black color to hair by boosting the hair growth. This oil also prevents premature graying of hair.
6. In Eye Disorders
Fruit paste is very helpful to cure conjunctivitis, myopia, corneal opacity and cataract. Paste can be locally applied on eyelids.
7. In Indigestion
Bibhitaki is very useful to cure problems related to digestion like – vomiting, loss of appetite, thirst, bloating, and flatulence. It also gives good results in curing piles and various worm infestations. The decoction of seed kernels is used.
8. In Pacifying Dosha
Bibhitaki is very useful in pacifying all three doshas, especially Pitta and Kapha dosha in the body.
