What is Histiocytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis?

Histolytic Necrotizing Lymphadenitis, also known as Kikuchi- Fujimoto Disease (KFD), is a rare benign disorder characterized by painful and inflamed lesions in lymph nodes of about 0.5 to 4 cm. It is mostly mistaken with malignant lymphoma because of the similarity in the symptoms. The nodal lesions are mainly composed of Histiocytis, lymphoid cells and plasmocytoid monocytes. This idiopathic disorder was first described in Japan in year 1972 by Kikuchi & Fujimoto and affects mostly women and adolescents. (1)
