Home Remedies for Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is the nonspecific inflammatory conditions of the alimentary tract and confined to the large intestine. It causes irritation, inflammation, and ulcers in the lining of your large intestines (colon) which produces pus and mucus. Under such conditions, the immune system attacks the healthy intestinal cells and causes inflammation of those cells. It affects the innermost lining of the colon and rectum and causes bleeding in the stool. Its symptoms usually develop over time.
Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis
The Principal Symptoms are
- Diarrhea with loose bloody stools containing mucus and pus.
- Defecation is often accompanied by lower abdominal discomfort although severe pain is uncommon.
- Tenesmus may occur because of proctitis (inflammation of rectum).
- Tenderness may be present.
- Exhausting diarrhea that is upto 20 liquid stools per 24 hours causing dehydration, fever and tachycardia.
- Fatigue
- Weight Loss
- Bloating

Home Remedies for Ulcerative colitis
1. Pomegranate Juice
Pomegranate is used for reducing the symptoms of ulcerative colitis such as dysentery, and diarrhea. Combination of dadima (pomegranate) juice with 1 teaspoonful of Yashtimadhu (mulethi) gives the best relief from symptoms. It has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
Action and Benefits:- It neutralizes the acids in the stomach. The juice helps to reduce the inflammation in the gut, Arrest the bleeding, heal the ulcers and reduce the frequency of passing of stool.
Dosage:- 50-60 ml two times a day.
2. Sheesham Leaves Juice
The botanical name of the herb is Dalbergia sissoo. It has antioxidant properties. The plant is bitter, astringent, pungent in taste and dry in qualities and light to digest. It also has healing and coagulating properties.
How to Make:-Take a few fresh leaves from the Sheesham tree, and crush them in a grinder by adding one cup of water in it. Strain and Drink it.
Action and Benefits:- This will stop the bleeding and heal the ulcers.
Dosage:- Drink 60ml glass of juice twice daily before your meal. Do this regularly for a few months until you get relief.
3. Bananas
Banana is a great option for the people who are suffering from diarrhea during ulcerative colitis. The pectin content in bananas help to ease the digestion related problems. Rutin is an active compound in banana which possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
Action and Benefits:- reduce episodes of diarrhea by formation of solid stools and heals the wounds.
How to Eat:-You can eat 3-4 bananas daily as per your need or you can mash 1 or 2 bananas in a bowl full of fresh curd and take two times a day.
4. Green Grass Juice
This herb has healing properties.
How to make:- Take fresh green grass and wash properly. Add 2-3 tablespoon of water and churn in the blender. Filter the mixture and pour in glass to drink.
Action and benefits:- This heals the ulcers in the gut.
Dosage:- 30-40 ml juice once a day at least for one month.
5. Rose Petal
The rose petals contain sedative, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic and cooling properties.
Action and benefits:- The fresh rose petal helps to reduce heartburn and acidity. Cooling nature of rose petals is useful in relieving the burning sensation. These petals balance the vitiated pitta in ulcerative patients and maintain the digestive fire.
How to consume:- Soak rose petals overnight in water. Drink that water the next morning in an empty stomach or you can also chew a few rose petals daily in an empty stomach.
6. Herbal Powder
Yashtimadhu (mulethi), rakta chandan (red sandalwood) and shatavari powders are beneficial in ulcerative colitis.
- Yashthimadhu: – Botanical name is Glycyrrhiza Glabra. Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant and anti-bacterial.
- Rakta chandan:- Botanical name – Pterocarpus santalinus. it has anti-inflammatory properties and cold potency
- Shatavari: – Botanical name of the herb is Asparagus racemosus. Anti-inflammatory, Anti-ulcerogenic and anti-diarrheal.
Dosage: – 3-6 gms of powder every morning and evening after the meals.
7. Marigold leaves juice (Calendula)
The juice of marigold leaves helps to reduce the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. It possesses anti-inflammatory, digestive properties and healing properties.
Actions and benefits:- It improves digestion and reduces inflammation and heals the ulcers.
How to prepare:- Take one cup of hot water. Put 1-2 teaspoons of marigold dried powder into it. Allow to stand for 10-15 minutes. Filter the mixture.
How to drink:- 20 ml once a day.
8. Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is an herb which has been used or consumed from centuries as a natural remedy for a variety of health-related issues. It is caffeine free and loaded with various antioxidant compounds that prevent the oxidative damages in the body, which arise due to the action of free radicals.
Action and benefits:- The tea helps to reduce acidity problems in Ulcerative patients and also inhibit the growth of bacteria which contribute to ulcer development.
How to prepare:- Take a few dried flowers of Chamomile and add them in one cup of boiling water. Stir for 5 minutes. Strain and cool it down for a few minutes.
How to drink:- Drink 30-40 ml twice daily (morning, evening) before your meals.
9. Fenugreek Leaves and Seeds
The common Indian name of the herb is Methi. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-ulcer properties.
Action and benefits:- It helps to protect the digestive tract by forming protective covering along the digestive tract. It reduces inflammation and heals ulcers.
How to consume:- Soak 1-2 tablespoon of fenugreek seeds overnight. Drink the water the next morning on an empty stomach. Do this regularly for a few months.
10. Apple
Apple is one of the best edible for Ulcerative Colitis patients. It has antimicrobial properties. It contains fibres and is good for constipation during ulcerative colitis.
Action and benefits:- Apple reduces the feeling of bloating. Loss of iron due to bleeding can easily be replenished by the consumption of apples.
How to eat: – 1 apple can be taken just after the meal. Boiled apples are also advised in some patients where ulcers are more in number and bleed easily.
All the home remedies which are mentioned above are tested and well effective to be used in Ulcerative Colitis. Patients should try these for better results.
