Ayurvedic Treatment for Psoriasis
Abstract
Ayurveda is the oldest traditional method of medicines originated from India about 5000 years ago. The Ayurveda system has the answer to treat all diseases which are long lasting or incurable as per modern science. Ayurvedic medicines treat diseases from their roots and prevent them from occurring again. One of the dreadful diseases in the human body is Psoriasis which is a skin disorder. We will discuss Psoriasis and its treatment with the help of Ayurvedic medicines in this article.
Introduction
Psoriasis is a long-lasting condition in which skin gets infected with itchy and red colored scaly patches mostly on the elbows, knees, scalp and trunk. It is a non-contagious inflammatory skin disease that changes the life cycle of skin cells. In psoriasis, cells rapidly develop on the skin and their continuous growth leads to scaly, thick plaques that cause discomfort and itching in individuals. According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis is the result of weaker Vata and Kapha dosha, which toxify the Mamsa Dhatu and Rakta Dhatu.
Causes of Psoriasis
Exact cause of Psoriasis is not still known, but it is thought to be the result of genetic, immune and environmental factors. Autoimmune dysfunctioning leads to the uncontrolled development of skin cells. Commonly, skin cells grab about 21-28 days to replace themselves with new cells. But in patients with Psoriasis only 2-6 days are taken by skin cells to replace themselves due to their excessive growth. Here are some factors that triggers the risk of Psoriasis:
- Excessive consumption of alcohol
- Over smoking
- Excess stress
- Infections such as skin or throat
- Injury of skin such as bug bite, cut or sunburn
- Dry or cold climatic conditions
- Several medications of Hypertension (Beta blockers), Anti-malarial drugs and lithium
Symptoms of Psoriasis
Symptoms of this disease vary from person to person, but some of the most common symptoms of Psoriasis are:
- Red colored patches on skin enveloped by silvery scales mostly on ear, scalp and area of genitals
- Stiff and swollen joints
- Soreness, burning or itching on skin
- Ridged, pitted or thickened nails
- Cracked and dry skin in which bleeding or itchiness can occur
Types of Psoriasis
1. Plaque Psoriasis
It is the most common type of psoriasis occurring in 80% to 90% of psoriasis patients. In this type, redness, crack and dry lesions on skin covered with silvery or white scales can be seen. Most probably it occurs on the knees, elbows, lower back and scalp. Itchiness and pain can be felt.
2. Scalp Psoriasis
In this type, psoriasis occurs on the scalp and may appear as a red itchy area with silver scale.
3. Inverse Psoriasis
Inverse psoriasis is mainly triggered by fungal infection. Areas of armpits, under the breast, in the groin and around the genitalia are mostly infected with red inflamed skin.
4. Erythrodermic Psoriasis
This type of psoriasis can cause large spots of fiery redness on the body surface. Erythrodermic psoriasis is found very rarely in patients.
5. Nail Psoriasis
Psoriasis occurs in fingernails and toenails in this type. Abnormal hair growth, pitting and discoloration are the effects of Nail psoriasis.
6. Guttate Psoriasis
It appears as little, individual, red colored spots on skin. These spots are not thick as in plaque psoriasis. Guttate psoriasis mostly occurs in children.
7. Pustular Psoriasis
Pustular psoriasis is the 5% of the total psoriasis that occurs in patients. It develops more in adults than children. In this psoriasis, white pustules or blisters of non-infectious pus surrounded by red skin occur.
8. Psoriatic Arthritis
About 30% of patients complain about inflammation in the joint with symptoms of arthritis along with psoriasis, that is why it is named as Psoriatic arthritis.
Symptoms vary from mild to severe and arthritis can affect any joint. Progressive joint damage and stiffness of joints occurs.
Complications of Psoriasis
Carelessness and improper treatment may lead to permanent joint damage and many other health problems, such as:
- Eye Problems (like uveitis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis and many more)
- Obesity
- Psoriatic Arthritis (stiffness and swelling of joints)
