Alternative Treatment of Hygral Fatigue (Over-Conditioned Hair)
Abstract
Hair is the protein filament that is found in the dermis. It is one of the defining features of mammals. Hair is derived from epidermis and has two parts i.e. hair follicle and hair shaft. Apart from the area of glabrous skin, all part is covered in follicles. Hair is composed of protein (alpha-keratin). Nowadays hair becomes a fashion icon for everyone either hair growth (long hair) or hair removal. But also there are some conditions which interfere with the growth of hair such as alopecia, baldness, graying of hair and hygral fatigue. In this article we will discuss the condition of hygral fatigue and its ayurvedic aspect.
Introduction
Hygral fatigue is a condition in which your hair follicles are damaged and cause swelling from excessive moisture. It occurs due to repeated and excessive swelling of the hair cuticle, just because of over moisture. Hair follicles are damaged due to entry of excessive moisture in the hair cuticle. When hairs are wet, the hair cuticle swells up and contracts as it dries and hair cuticles are not designed in a way that it constantly changes its form. So it will weaken over time and lead to breakage. High porosity hairs are the example of this hygral fatigue because it has more open cuticles in which moisture can enter and exit easily.
Ayurvedic Aspect
Hygral fatigue is correlated with the vitiation of kapha dosha and especially with vitiation of Tarpaka kapha which is a type of Kapha dosha. Kapha is responsible for the over moisture in the body and due to vitiation of tarpaka kapha it will increase the moisture in the hair which further causes hygral fatigue. If a person eats guru (heavy), snigdha (unctuous), abhishyandi (unfavourable food) etc it will increase the kapha dosha and lead to this disease.
For this disease vaman (induce vomiting with medicated water) procedure is best.
Etiology/Causes
Genes play an important role in this condition. It determines how porous your hairs are. Repeated swelling of hair follicles from excessive moisture can cause hygral fatigue.
Other Reasons are:
- Over use of shampoo and conditioner
- Damage to hair
- Loss of protective oil in the scalp
- Combing and finger detangling too aggressively
- Hair are tangled terribly
Clinical Features/Signs and Symptoms
When a person has hygral fatigue then the patient experiences following symptoms:
- Weak hair
- Excessive breakage of hairs
- Gummy appearance of hair when they are wet
- Shedding of hair
- Raising and damage of cuticle cells
- Protective fatty layer is lost which is coating your hair
- Hair becomes tangled, dull, frizzi, brittle
Prevention
As we heard that proverb that prevention is better than cure. In hygral fatigue we won’t be able to undo the damage of hairs. We just minimize the future damage by following some preventive measures as I am going to tell you in this article. These preventive measures are:
1. Change the Hair Products
If hairs are over-moisturized then change the hair products or we can simply minimize the use of shampoo and conditioners. This will reduce the extra moisture of hair.
2. Change the Washing Routine
If your hair is suffering from hygral fatigue then just change or reduce the washing pattern of hair. If we reduce the washing pattern of hair it will automatically prevent hair from getting over moist. It will also protect the natural protective oils from washing out from hair.
3. Shampoo Gently
When we shampoo our hair very harshly or aggressively then there are more chances for damage of layers of hair. So the best method to use shampoo is that when we shampoo we must gently massage your scalp with shampoo and let them flow when you rinse.
4. Wear a Swim Cap
When we are going to swim, we must wear a swim cap to prevent the loss of protective layers of hair. Swimming pools contain chlorine which is harmful for the health of hair as well as for scalp. So one should always wear a swim cap while going to the swimming pool.
5. Comb Hair Gently
We must comb our hair very gently to avoid damage to hair. One should avoid combing in wet hair; it will damage the hair cuticles. So let your hair dry first before combing. If your hairs are curly, then it is good to use a wide tooth comb to avoid damage.
6. Use Shampoo Whose pH is low
Alkaline shampoos strip the protective layer from hair follicles. Use shampoo whose pH is equal to scalp pH that is 5.5. it will prevent the breakdown of the 18-MEA layer.
7. Use Coconut oil Prior to Wash
Coconut oil is best for the health of hair. It will reduce protein loss from hair when used prior to wash. Coconut oil is made up of fatty acid chain which is called lauric acid. It is thought that this oil is absorbed into hair follicles easier than other oils.
So these are some preventive measures from which we can reduce the risk of further damage of hairs. We can’t undo the damage but surely can reduce the risk of further damage of hair cuticles and prevent from hygral fatigue.
