Ancient Ayurvedic Remedies for the Treatment of Melanoma

Overview

Melanoma is considered as the most serious type of skin cancer developing in melanocytes (the cells melanin). Melanin is the pigment behind the color of the skin. Melanoma can also occur into eyes and sometimes in the throat or nose. This type of cancer is more common in women before the age 50 but after 50 years, frequency of happening melanoma increases in men as compared to women. Melanoma has a tendency to run into families as it is an inherited or genetic condition. Diagnosis of melanoma is necessary to be done before spreading cancer cells into other body parts. Let’s discuss it in detail.

Melanoma

Symptoms

Melanoma can occur at any part of the body, but mostly it develops on body parts having direct exposure to the sun like face, arms, legs and back. But development of melanoma can be seen in body parts that don’t get much exposure to the sun. For example, palms of the hand, soles of the feet and fingernail beds. These types of hidden melanomas are more frequent in populations with darker skin.

The initial signs and symptoms of melanoma are:

  • Changes in an existing mole.
  • Unusual looking growth on skin or development of new pigmented skin.

It is not mandatory that melanoma always begins with a mole. It can also develop as normal looking skin.

Normal Moles

Normal moles can be observed in black, brown or tan color with a surrounding border which separates the surrounding skin from the mole. These moles are oval in shape and have a diameter of about six millimeters which is almost equal to the size of a pencil eraser. Many of the moles begin to appear in childhood and formation of new moles continuously occurs until forty years of age. With the passage of time, moles may change in their appearance and even disappear also.

Abnormal Moles Indicating Melanoma

Identifying abnormal or unusual moles is indeed as they are indicating the melanoma. You can identify unusual moles by thinking of the letters ABCDE, which resembles:

  • A for Asymmetrical shape: Check if the moles have asymmetrical shapes. For example, the appearance of two halves is different.
  • B for Border irregularity: Borders of these types of moles are irregular, scalloped or notched.
  • C for Color change: Check for progress of moles, they can show many colors or an unpatterned color distribution.
  • D for Diameter: Unusual moles are larger than 6 millimetres in diameter.
  • E for Evolving: Wait and look at changes happening in moles over time. These changes may include shape, size, or color. Moles may also evolve in showing bleeding and itchiness as symptoms of melanoma.

Hidden Melanomas

Melanoma can occur at any body part having extreme, little or no sun exposure like genitals, scalp, soles, the spaces between toes and palms. Occurring melanoma on these places is termed as hidden melanoma because people usually don’t think of checking these places in their daily routine. Although, when melanoma occurs in dark skin people, it is more likely to occur in hidden areas. Hidden melanomas include:

  • Melanoma in the Eye: Occurring of melanoma in the eye is known as eye melanoma or ocular melanoma. In the eye, melanoma usually occurs in the layer under the sclera (white portion of the eye). This melanoma can affect normal vision and improper treatment can cause blindness also.
  • Melanoma in the urinary tract, vagina, mouth, or digestive tract: Mucosal melanoma often occurs in the mucus layer present in the urinary tract, vagina, anus, esophagus, mouth and nose. This type of melanoma is quite difficult to diagnose because symptoms mimic like many other common conditions.
  • Melanoma under a nail: Occurring melanoma under a fingernail or toenail is termed as Acral-lentiginous melanoma. It is a rare type of melanoma and more common in black people, asians and others with dark pigment skin.

Causes

Undesirable changes happening in melanocytes (melanin generating cells) can cause melanoma. Under normal circumstances, new skin cells grow in a controlled manner. Newly generated healthy cells push older cells in the direction of the skin surface, where they deteriorate and fall off. But in melanoma, new cells begin to grow in an uncontrolled manner or in a large amount due to damage in their DNA and they form a mass of cancerous cells in the skin.

The reason behind the change in DNA of skin cells and how they develop into melanoma is under study. It is supposed that a combination of several factors are responsible for this condition such as genetic factors, environmental factors, UV rays exposure etc. Prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or from tanning lamps are more responsible for development of melanoma.

Risk Factors

Here are some factors triggering the development of Melanoma:

  • Excess exposure to UV rays: Underlying prolonged exposure to the Ultraviolet rays coming from the sun or other sources can higher the risk of skin cancer as well as melanoma.
  • Residing near the earth’s equator: Populations living in a region on or near the earth’s equator are at high risk of melanoma because sun rays fall directly with high amounts of ultraviolet radiations on these areas.
  • Fair skin: Having fair skin can also trigger the development of melanoma because fair skin has less melanin which means less protection from Ultraviolet rays. Having red or blonde hairs, light colored eyes or sunburns, then you are at higher risk of melanoma.
  • Low immunity: Weakened immune system may easily develop an immune system in your body. Usage of immunosuppressants or several other medications can make your immune system imbalanced or weakened.
  • Having a large number of normal or unusual moles:  If your body has more than 50 moles on skin, then you can easily be prone to melanoma. Also, an unusual type of mole is a special indicator of melanoma. The unusual type of mole is medically termed as dysplastic nevi which has irregular borders, increased diameter and unpatterned color distribution.
  • Family history: If anyone of your parents, grandparent, close relatives or siblings are suffering from melanoma, then there is a greater chance of occuring melanoma in you also.

Diagnosis

Several tests and procedures are performed to diagnose melanoma, these are:

  1. Physical Exam: When you visit a doctor, he may ask your health history, and examine your skin for detection of any signs of melanoma.
  2. Biopsy: In this method, physicians took a small sample of tissue from the infected site to check if a suspicious skin lesion is melanoma or not. This sample is sent to the laboratory for testing. Procedure of biopsy depends on the situation of the patient. Mostly, punch biopsy is recommended by the doctor in which a circular blade is pressed into the skin surrounding the suspicious mole to pinch a tissue.
