Herbal Remedies for Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis
Abstract
Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a rare, chronic, progressive and even actually fatal neurological condition disease caused by the measles virus, presumably as a result of an inability of the nervous system to eradicate the virus. It occurs in children and adolescents, usually many years after the primary virus infection. The onset of this condition is insidious with intellectual deterioration, apathy and clumsiness followed by myoclonic jerks, rigidity and dementia. The CSF may show a mild lymphocytic pleocytosis and the electroencephalogram is distinctive with periodic bursts of triphasic waves. Although there is persistent measles specific IgG in serum and CSF, antiviral therapy is ineffective and death ensues within years. Further, Let’s discuss it in detail.
Introduction
The condition is also named as Dawson’s disease or Dawson’s encephalitis. It is very common in countries that lack standard immunization programs. The countries where young children regularly receive the measles vaccination, incidence is less than 10 per year. Most of the people who develop measles never get subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. According to many studies it is stated that this reaction to measles virus is due to abnormal immune response or can be due to the mutated forms of virus. This condition generally affects male adolescents as compared to females.
Causes
SSPE is a condition that is caused by slow measles virus. These viruses may stay dormant in humans for a long period of time and then no one why they become reactive. The role of genes in such cases is often not understood well. The reactivation of viruses causes many symptoms in the human body. The causative agent is rubeola and generally the inappropriate response of the immune system to rubeola virus is understood as the reason for the onset of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis. In a few cases it can be associated with animal contact. The affected individuals have contact with monkeys, dogs or kittens that later died due to the same illness.
Signs and Symptoms
The Sign and Symptoms in This Condition Are Divided According To Stages
Early Stage: This usually includes behavioral changes such as failing school, memory loss, laziness and irritability.
Middle stage: With the sign and symptoms of early stage patients will show involuntary muscle movement (myoclonic jerks) followed by seizures. This condition is also accompanied by personality changes, outbursts of temper, lack of sleep, stupor, spasticity and disorientation.
Advance stages: The advance stage includes loss of previously acquired intellectual skills, poor memory and being judgmental (dementia). This stage also includes general neurological deterioration. Blindness can develop if the lesion is present in the vision center of the brain that is called as cortical blindness and optic atrophy (wasting of nerves of eye) can also be seen.
If the condition is not given attention at the correct time then patients can develop muscle rigidity, elevated body temperature (hyperthermia), respiration abnormalities, abnormal respiration, heart rate and blood pressure can also be noticed. Even hypothalamus gland, which is situated very deep inside the brain can also get affected which indicates altered bodily functions.
Complications
The subacute sclerosing panencephalitis can result in pneumonia if there is involvement of a respiration system. It can also induce coma or can result in life threatening conditions.
Affected Populations
In India, the incidence is estimated to be around 20 cases per year per million of population and generally males are commonly affected even in children and in adults too.
Related Disorders
Disease like progressive rubella panencephalitis is also a slowly progressing disease and resembles SSPE. It is caused by rubella virus and usually develops due to congenital rubella syndrome or childhood rubella infection.
Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a condition that usually occurs in patients with a certain form of cancer, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and also in those who are using immunosuppressant drugs.
Investigations
The cerebrospinal fluid and blood test report will show rise in anti measles antibody values. In CSF it is equal to or greater than 1:4 and in blood it is generally greater than 1:4. In MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) brain abnormalities are easily seen.
Treatment of Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis
There is no cure for this condition. The progression of disease can be delayed by prescribing some antiviral drugs and prescription of some anticonvulsant drugs. Most of the people die due to SSPE in one to three years.
