Ayurvedic Treatment of Polymyalgia Rheumatica
Abstract
Muscle pain or myalgia is very common nowadays and almost everyone experiences discomfort around their muscles. This type of pain can be experienced anywhere in the body but when this condition becomes chronic it gives rise to a condition called Polymyalgia Rheumatica. It is mainly characterized by myalgia in the proximal regions especially hip and shoulder girdles. Almost 15 percent of the total population suffering from Polymyalgia Rheumatica develops Giant cell arteries (GCA) and 40 to 50 percent of cases with (GCA) are mostly associated with PR. Through this article, we are going to discuss this health disorder Polymyalgia Rheumatica more in detail and its treatment through herbal remedies.
What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica?
If we define Polymyalgia rheumatica it is simply an inflammatory disorder that causes stiffness and pain in muscles of various parts of the body. The most common sites affecting PR are the neck, arms, hips, and shoulders. The symptoms appear suddenly and may worsen in the morning. It is commonly seen in people ages above the age of 65 and rarely seen at the age of 50.
Polymyalgia Rheumatica mostly occurs in Women as compared to Men. Northern European people are at higher risk of developing PR. This condition also causes swelling of the blood vessels especially seen in the arms, neck, and scalp. If not treated properly it will lead to pain in the jaw, headaches, and in some cases blindness.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Pain and stiffness around the shoulder are common symptoms and the stiffness may gradually spread from one area to the other. The other signs seen in this disease are: –
- Loss of appetite
- Malaise
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Weight loss
- Anemia
- Low-grade fever
- Decreased motion
- Depression
The symptoms may develop quickly or some might take several days to appear. Some people suffer from symptoms overnight and in some cases, the condition becomes worse in the morning. In some cases when the condition becomes severe, it is difficult for them to move or perform different activities. It is also difficult for them to sleep due to pain and stiffness.
What are the Causes for Polymyalgia Rheumatica?
The main cause for Polymyalgia rheumatica is still not known but there are certain genes that increase the risk of developing PR.
There are some environmental factors that are known for the development of the condition. In some cases, it is seen that people with Polymyalgia suffer from seasonal pains or can be triggered by some viral infection. But rapid onsets of the symptoms might be triggered by infection but there is no proven link for this.
How Polymyalgia Rheumatica Can Be Diagnosed?
The symptoms might appear similar to inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. It is important to do the physical examination and several tests can be done.
Physical examination is done where arms, neck, and legs are carefully tested where the ranges of mobility are done. The physician may show some sign of inflammation in the body.
Other Tests that can be done are
- ESR (Erythrocyte sedimentation rate)
- C-Reactive protein levels (These tests may appear high in a patient with PR)
- The biopsy can also be done by taking small samples of tissue from the artery present in the temple which might show inflammation in the blood vessels.
Treatment
According to Allopath’s there is no cure for the disease but can be managed through corticosteroids like prednisone which will reduce inflammation. Long-term use of this medicine will lead to the risk of developing side effects like diabetes, weight gain, depression, high blood pressure, and many more.
According to Ayurveda Polymyalgia Rheumatica is considered as Vata Vyadhi and causative factors are considered to be eating dry or cold foods, excessive running, jumping, fear, and many more.
