What is Oromandibular dystonia? – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment
Abstract
Oromandibular dystonia is also known as cranial dystonia in some instances where forceful contractions of muscles of jaw, face and tongue result in involuntary movements, interfering with the closing and opening of the mouth. Speech and chewing is affected due to them. There are various types of dystonia depending upon the part of muscles they affect. In this article we have discussed the detailed description of Oromandibular dystonia and herbal remedies offered by Planet Ayurveda to manage and treat it naturally.
Introduction
Oromandibular dystonia affecting the face, mouth and jaw is a rare focal neurological disorder. There occur atypical and rhythmic movements due to severe and lasting contractions of muscles in the jaw, mouth and face. It is the focal type of dystonia which affects only two or three parts of the body. Oromandibular dystonia affects the oral cavity and lower facial muscles. There occur sustained or repetitive prolonged and involuntary spasmodic movements of facial, tongue and masticator muscles. Oromandibular dystonia is jaw closing and opening, lingual dystonia or jaw deviating dystonia or combination of any of these. When oromandibular dystonia is present along with the dystonic movements of the upper face and blepharospasm, this condition is known as Meige’s syndrome.
Oromandibular dystonia is common in women as compared to the men and its signs and symptoms usually appear in later stages of life like around 40-70 years of age.
Signs and Symptoms
Due to contractions of muscle of face, mouth and jaw there are certain signs and symptoms reported in Oromandibular dystonia patients
- Involuntary opening of mouth
- Unable to open clenched jaw
- Lower side of jaw shifts toward the back side or one side
- Tongue moves involuntarily
- Involuntary movements occur in lips and face
- Slurred speech
- Drooling
- Difficulty in swallowing or chewing
Causes
Oromandibular dystonia can occur idiopathically where there is no apparent cause of family history present in the case. Also there can be secondary oromandibular dystonia seen in many cases where due to disorders like Wilson’s disease or consumption of certain drugs, this form of dystonia can occur. Some cases of inherited oromandibular dystonia are also reported.
Diagnosis
Detailed physical examination, thorough medical history and neurological examination will help in the diagnosis of oromandibular dystonia. No exact test is present yet for the confirmed diagnosis of this disorder, however certain laboratory tests can help in it, like
- Blood and urine test
- MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
- CT (Computed tomography) scan
- EMG (Electromyography)
- Genetic testing
Treatment of Oromandibular Dystonia
Oromandibular dystonia is treated in a highly individualized way as symptoms may vary from one person to other. Conventionally, the injection of botulinum toxin is given into the lateral pterygoid masseter and temporalis muscles to improve the chewing and speech. However there are certain side effects of this injection like difficulty in swallowing, marked weakness and slurred speech.
