Herbal Remedies For Atopic Dermatitis
Abstract
Atopic dermatitis is a disease of the skin. Dermatitis means inflammation of the skin. This is one of the largest organs of our body. This is the outer part of the body that protects us from water loss and infections. Every person has a different type of texture. This organ helps in regulating the body temperature. This is an important structure which helps us to differentiate between hot and cold things or the environment. Skin is a flexible and soft organ of the body. The common skin type that suffers from skin disease is dry skin as dry skin is not able to hydrate itself. However, there are various skin conditions that affect the texture of the skin. So in this article we will talk about atopic dermatitis and its herbal remedies in detail.
Introduction
Atopic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition. In this condition the skin becomes red and itchy. This disease is one of the common disorders which occur throughout the world. It can occur at any age, but this disease most commonly occurs in children. It is also known as Eczema. This disease is a chronic condition and it may occur due to Asthma or hay fever. Dermatitis is a term known as inflammation of the skin characterized by swollen and cracked skin. This usually starts in childhood and severity changes over the years. The rashes tend to flare up and go away and then come back again over time. armpits, face, back, Chest, back of the knee etc are the common affected sites of this condition.
Ayurvedic Aspect For Atopic Dermatitis
In Ayurveda, we can simply correlate this disease with Vicharchika that comes under the heading of kshudra-Kushtha. Acharya Charka said that a person who uses cold and hot things simultaneously, doing over eating, drink milk over fish, intake of mostly cereal diet, eating over indigestion, doing exercise after having heavy meal, take honey, intake of kakamachi in excessive manner, heavy exertion and staying in intense heat, suppresses the urges of vomiting, apply too much oil over body etc then the person will become the patient of Vicharchika and this further results into the symptoms like pimples which is associated with itching, blackening of the skin and also with discharge and pain.
Etiology/Causes
The exact cause of this disease is not known. But some researchers believe that the following are the causes of this disease:
- Family History
- Living in a cold and polluted area
- Some food allergies
- Stress And Anger
- Animal Dander
- Dry Skin
- Strong Soaps
- Pollen Allergies
- Dust Exposure
Clinical Features/Signs And Symptoms
People who are suffering from this disease often have dry and scaly skin. The other possible symptoms of this disease are:
- Itching (first symptom of atopic dermatitis)
- Small raised bumps which leaks fluid when scratched
- Dark circles around the eye
- Red Patches
- Hyperpigmentation on the neck (Dirty neck)
- Sensitive and swollen skin
Risk Factors
The primary risk factors for this disease are:
- Having Family History
- Allergies
- Hay Fever

Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made on the physical examination. Lab test is not required to diagnose the disease. A doctor will check the skin appearance and texture and will make a diagnosis of atopic dermatitis. But sometimes a doctor may suggest a skin patch allergy test for the diagnosis. This test is helpful to rule out the rash over the skin due to an allergy or something else.
Prevention
The following preventive measures should be followed by the patient:
- Moisturize the skin twice a day
- Use only gentle soaps
- Avoid triggering factors
- Take a bleach bath
