Abstract
Spondylosis is a broad term that is simply used to show some type of degeneration in the spine. Commonly spondylosis is used to describe osteoarthritis of the spine but also gives signs of spinal degeneration. It is a general term for age related wear and tear changes affecting the vertebrae and may be applied nonspecifically to any and all degenerative conditions affecting the discs, vertebral bodies or associated joints for lumbar spine. In this article we are going to discuss Lumbar spondylosis, its epidemiology, symptoms and management according to Ayurveda.
Introduction
Spondylosis can feel like an emblem for the ageing process. Slow process of wearing and tearing is happening in all living beings. In a nutshell, Spondylosis is a degenerative condition that may worsen as a person grows older and it can affect any region of the spine. Scientifically, this is also a form of arthritis, commonly we think of arthritis as something we can get in our hands, knees or ankles, but the spine can also become victims of this disease. It can affect middle-aged people or older people. More than 80% of people show evidence of the condition on X-rays, MRIs etc. Nobody wants to get older except little kids but you have to. But you don’t have to develop lumbar spondylosis and if you do get it then you don’t have to let it demolish your life quality. In this article we are going to know about Lumbar spondylosis, its causes and symptoms, its diagnosis and preventive measures according to Ayurveda.
Causes
Spondylosis is a common disease. Some patients experience no pain, and some may experience severe pain in the lower back.
Bone Spurs
spine is made up of many bones called vertebrae that are flat cylindrical shaped and in between these vertebrae there are Intervertebral discs that serves as the cushion and functions as a shock absorbent. As we get older, this disc begins to dry and as a result its shock absorbing capability decreases, which transfers more burden to vertebrae and leads to bone spur formation. Bone spurs can press spinal nerve roots and show pain and inflammation.
Facet Joint Dysfunction
It is also termed as Facet joint syndrome or facet disease, as the discs between the vertebrae become thinner, more pressure is felt over the facet joints that leads to more friction and ultimately damage the cartilage. When the cartilage surface breaks down that leads bone to rub together, which results in bone spur formation or joint hypertrophy while trying to stabilize the segment.
Symptoms
Spondylosis can affect any joint in the body, it occurs more commonly in the neck and lower back. Lower back is at risk because it manages and distributes maximum body weight and structural stress. Common symptoms include:-
- Stiffness after a period of rest or after waking up in morning
- Paraesthesia like numbness or tingling sensations in legs
- Lower back pain
- Pain travels to buttocks, legs and feet
- Pain is worse after prolonged sitting
- Pain gradually increases with time
Risk Factors
- Age
- Overweight or obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Addictive to smoking
- Underlying conditions like diabetes, psoriasis, tuberculosis, etc.
- Repeated occupational trauma
Diagnosis
To diagnose this condition a doctor will conduct a physical and neurological examination and give a close look to patients spine mobility, its range of motion forward, backwards or side tilts. The physician will inspect the shape or abnormal curvature of the spine and may palpate to get tender points, stiffness or spasms in the patient’s back. X-rays and MRI to detect any degenerative changes and any abnormality in soft tissue of the spine.
Treatment
- Analgesics or pain relievers
- Anti inflammatory drugs
- Muscle relaxants
- Nerve blocks
- Injections
- Radiofrequency ablations
Spondylosis is treated with a multi-modal therapeutic approach which can best address the multifaceted nature of the disease. The main goal is to improve the strength and coordination of muscles that surround the spine. According to Ayurveda, pain, tingling sensation, numbness, stiffness of spine are major symptoms of lumbar spondylosis which is predominantly due to vitiation of Vata dosha. Lumbar spondylosis can be correlated with Kati vata or prishtha shoola or trik graha.
