Alternative Treatment For Osteopenia With Herbal Remedies
ABSTRACT
Osteopenia means lower bone density than the normal. Bone density or bone mineral density is a vital part of your bones as it is the assessment of the amount of minerals in your bones. Bone density is maximum around the age of 30 years. Level of BMD, i.e. bone mineral density, helps in evaluation of the chances of breaking a bone while doing a normal activity. If you have osteopenia, your bone density will be lower than normal, however osteopenia is not considered to be a disease. In this article you will get all the information about Osteopenia and herbal remedies to treat it.
INTRODUCTION TO OSTEOPENIA
Osteopenia is the condition when the bones of the person are not healthy bones but osteoporosis did not start yet. In osteopenia the bones become weak but still the fragility like osteoporosis have not set in. Bone density is at its peak when a person is around 30 years and the usual age of osteopenia is above 50 years of age. However if you have strong bones when you are young the chances of osteopenia are less and weak bones in young age can give you the condition earlier than usual. However osteopenia is a very common condition that can affect anyone. You might not prevent osteopenia but you can definitely prevent it from converting into osteoporosis by taking a good diet, exercise and herbal supplements which can help you keep your bones dense.
AYURVEDIC CONCEPT OF OSTEOPENIA
There is no exact disease in Ayurveda to correlate with osteopenia but the predominant dosha which is found to be vitiated in this condition is Vata dosha. Asthi dhatu, i.e. bone tissue is one of the main locations for the Vata dosha. Hence vitiation in the Vata dosha due to Vata disturbing lifestyle activities and food causes depletion of the bone tissues causing low bone mineral density and osteopenia. Hence it is concluded that increase in Vata dosha, i.e. Vata vriddhi causes the condition.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OSTEOPENIA
Usually there are no signs and symptoms of osteopenia and are diagnosed in a routine BMD test. Signs and symptoms generally develop when osteoporosis sets in. Sometimes you see people with osteopenia having weakness and pains in the bones.
CAUSES OF OSTEOPENIA
You must be knowing that bones are made up of living tissues which tends to grow and build in a healthy person up to the age of 30 years and losing is insignificant. However after a person passes the age of 30-35 years, these bones start to break down or lose faster than building up. This leads to decreased bone density to a certain level in every healthy person. Decreasing of bone density occurs after this throughout life. However osteopenia is a condition where bone density decreased more than the normal level as per the age and this is caused due to several factors like:
- People with untreated celiac disease
- Overactive thyroid or taking too much medications of thyroid
- Certain medications like steroids, and anti seizure drugs
- Undergoing chemotherapy
- Lack of calcium or vitamin D
- Excessive consumption of alcohol
- Smoking
- Sedentary lifestyle and lack of lifestyle
DIAGNOSIS OF OSTEOPENIA
Osteopenia as already mentioned do not have signs and symptoms usually and hence the diagnosis is difficult. The only diagnostic way here appear is BMD, i.e. Bone mineral density test. However National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends BMD tests if you are:
- A female of 65 years or older.
- A postmenopausal female of 50 years age or older.
- A women that is around the age of menopause with high chances of fracturing a bone because of other risk factors.
- A woman after menopause with other risk factors but younger than 65 years age.
- A male above 65 years of age with other risk factors.
- Suffer from fragile fracture, i.e. break a bone with insignificant trauma or injury.
This test is fast and painless and gives an estimate of thickness and density of the bones by using X-rays. Other than this if you have below given symptoms of spinal fracture, do contact doctor as soon as possible:
- Pain in back while bending or twisting
- Severe and sudden pain in back
- Height loss
- Stooped shape or curved shape of spine
- Pain in back which aggravates on walking or standing and ameliorates while lying down
TREATMENT FOR OSTEOPENIA
Conventionally osteopenia is considered to be incurable and the main aim is to preserve the bone mineral density as much as possible with the help of calcium treatment, exercise, healthy diet and supplements for vitamin D deficiency along with exposure to the sun in order to let your body get enough amount of vitamin D.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT FOR OSTEOPENIA
As increase in Vata dosha causes osteopenia, hence the main aim of Ayurvedic treatment here is to restore the balance of Vata dosha, eradicating the root cause and treating the osteopenia naturally. There are many herbs and minerals in nature that possess natural quality to balance the tridosha.
