ABSTRACT
Eyes are one of the most essential sense organs in the body. It helps to connect us with the surrounding environment, and keeps us aware. The eye is made of different structures such as cornea, pupil, iris, sclera, etc. The proper functioning of all the components of the eye is necessary for a proper and healthy vision. But, there are a variety of diseases that affect the eye adversely and lead to various difficulties. One such eye-related difficulty is scleritis. This condition of scleritis will be described in detail along with the ayurvedic perspective in the following article.
INTRODUCTION
Sclera is the white part of the eye, this tissue is wrapped around the eyeball and serves various functions. It helps to protect the eye from various kinds of injuries and also maintains the shape of the eyeball. But various conditions can hinder the normal state of sclera, one such condition is scleritis. Scleritis is the inflammation of the sclera part of the eye. Scleritis presents with redness of the eye along with pain; it may or may not be accompanied with vision loss. Scleritis can be of two types anterior scleritis and posterior scleritis, explained as follows –
- Anterior Scleritis: When the anterior portion of sclera is inflamed, it is called anterior scleritis. It can be of various types, diffuse, nodular, or necrotizing forms. The necrotizing form of anterior scleritis is the most severe form of scleritis presenting severe pain and extreme tenderness on the sclera.
- Posterior Scleritis: When the posterior part of the sclera is involved in the inflammation, it is called posterior scleritis. It can lead to serious consequences such as detachment of the retina, choroidal folds, etc. The posterior scleritis is often accompanied with diminished vision or vision loss and pain during the movement of the eye.
CAUSES OF SCLERITIS
There could be various causes that may lead to the presentation of scleritis. It is often considered an autoimmune disorder because the body cells start attacking the other healthy body cells. Scleritis may be associated with joint swelling, various connective tissue disease, eye infection, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Sjogren’s syndrome or scleroderma, etc. Scleritis can be a result of an injury also. This will lead to the presentation of various symptoms which will be described as follows.
SYMPTOMS OF SCLERITIS
Symptoms of scleritis will include pain and tenderness in the eye. It can be accompanied with redness and swelling of the sclera (the white portion of the eye). The vision may be blurry and the patient may experience an overflow of tears. The sensitivity towards light is increased; the patient may also complain of painful jaw, face or head.
DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT FOR SCLERITIS
The diagnosis of scleritis will require a proper eye examination along with a detailed history. The ophthalmologist will examine the eye through a slit lamp. As soon as the diagnosis is confirmed, the treatment should be started. The treatment of scleritis will include administration of corticosteroids, NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs), antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs, etc. In cases where the condition is not managed by medicine, surgery may also be required according to the allopathic approach of medicine. The ayurvedic aspect will be described as follows.
AYURVEDIC ASPECT ON SCLERITIS
The scleritis can be correlated to sirajala in the ayurvedic perspective. Sirajala is considered to be a shuklagata roga i.e. it affects the shukla or white part of the eye. It is presented with a web-like reddish presentation in the eye. It is considered to be a result of vitiation of the rakta dosha in the body. The management of the condition of scleritis will include balancing the rakta dosha in the body. There are various ayurvedic formulations available to balance the vitiated rakta dosha and improve the condition of scleritis such as neem capsules, gandhak rasayan, amalaki rasayan, panchatikta ghrit, etc.
