Alternative Treatment of Erythema Dischromicum Perstans(EDP) – Ashy Dermatosis
Abstract
Skin is the largest sense organ of the body. There are various diseases that deplete its texture, one such disease will be described below. Erythema Dischromicum Perstans (EDP), also known as Ashy dermatosis, is a rare skin disorder that causes asymptomatic grey or brown macules on the skin. The exact cause of EDP is unknown, but it has been associated with genetic factors, infections, drugs, and autoimmune disorders. In this article, we will discuss the types, causes, symptoms, signs, herbal remedies by Planet Ayurveda, and Ayurvedic perspective on EDP.
Introduction to the Erythema dischromicum perstans (EDP)
Erythema Dischromicum Perstans (EDP), also known as Ashy Dermatosis is characterised by the presence of ashy-grey macules on the trunk and extremities. Erythema dischromicum perstans (EDP) is a chronic, non-pruritic condition that can cause psychological distress due to its cosmetic appearance The condition was first described in 1957 by Ramirez-Correa and subsequently named Erythema Dischromicum Perstans by Sanchez et al. in 1961. EDP is more common in people with Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI, and affects both sexes equally.
Causes
Erythema Dischromicum Perstans (EDP) is idiopathic in nature. Idiopathic means that the exact cause of the condition is unknown. There are, however, secondary causes of EDP, such as drugs, infections, and autoimmune disorders, which can lead to a similar clinical presentation. It is important for healthcare providers to rule out secondary causes before making a diagnosis of idiopathic EDP.
Symptoms
The primary symptom of EDP is asymptomatic, grey or brown macules on the skin. These macules are usually seen on the face, neck, and upper trunk. They may also appear on the arms and legs.
Signs
EDP is diagnosed based on the characteristic appearance of the macules on the skin. The macules are usually round or oval in shape and may vary in size. They do not have any scaling or texture changes.
Risk Factors
EDP is more common in women than men and usually occurs in adults between the ages of 20 and 50. There is also an increased incidence of EDP in people with darker skin tones.
Diagnosis
EDP is diagnosed based on the appearance of the skin lesions. A skin biopsy may be done to confirm the diagnosis. EDP is a benign condition and does not cause any serious health complications.
Treatment
There is no specific treatment for EDP, but some treatments may help reduce the appearance of the macules. Topical steroids, tacrolimus, and pimecrolimus have shown some improvement in reducing the hyperpigmentation. However, these treatments can cause side effects such as skin thinning, irritation, and increased risk of infections.
Ayurvedic Aspect of the Erythema Dischromicum Perstans (EDP)
According to Ayurveda, Erythema Dischromicum Perstans (EDP) is caused by an imbalance in the doshas, particularly the pitta dosha. Pitta dosha imbalance leads to accumulation of toxins in the body, which can manifest as skin disorders like EDP. Ayurvedic Treatment for EDP aims to balance the doshas and eliminate the toxins from the body. This is achieved through dietary and lifestyle modifications, as well as the use of herbs and supplements.
In Ayurveda, herbs like manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) and neem (Azadirachta indica) are used to purify the blood and remove toxins from the body. These herbs are believed to have a cooling effect on the body, which helps to balance the pitta dosha.
There is a shloka from Charaka Samhita, one of the classical texts of Ayurveda, which states, "sareeram satvam cha aatmanam tridha vyapadgam sthiti prakriti hetubhih." This means that the body, mind, and soul are interconnected and disease occurs when there is an imbalance in any of these three. Ayurvedic treatment for EDP focuses on restoring balance to the body, mind, and soul, which can lead to a reduction in symptoms and an overall improvement in health.
