Ayurvedic Treatment for Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
Abstract
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the commonest condition of the vagina caused by the overgrowth of the microorganisms normally present in the vagina. It is also known as vaginal bacteriosis which is the commonest cause for vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. It is not a sexually transmitted infection. Bacterial vaginosis should not be confused with candidiasis or trichomonas vaginalis which are due to imbalance of naturally occurring bacterial flora, present in a woman’s vagina. About half of women have BV without any symptom.
SYMPTOMS OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS
Vaginal discharge is the main symptom present in the BV. Usually 50 percent of women do not present with any symptom otherwise these include, Thin grayish white vaginal discharge, Vaginal itching, Foul smell especially after sexual intercourse, Painful sexual intercourse, Burning sensation while urinating etc.
CAUSES OF BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS
Normally there are various different types of harmless bacteria in the vagina that makes a defense mechanism against harmful germs like Candida which causes thrush. BV may occur in women who are not sexually active, Having multiple sex partners, due to use of intrauterine devices and vaginal douches for contraception, Recent use of antibiotics, Smoking cigarette etc. excessive washing of vagina may alter the normal balance of the bacteria present in the vagina which is responsible for BV to develop.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS OF THE BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS
Bacterial vaginosis may lead to several complications like Pelvic inflammatory diseases, in pregnancy it may causes miscarriage, premature delivery and low birth-weight baby. It may causes HIV infection susceptibility, Some sexual transmitted infections, Post surgical infections, Tubal factor infertility etc.
HOW BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS IS DIAGNOSED?
BV is diagnosed easily with symptoms only like fishy whitish grey discharge, itching, burning feeling etc. sometimes discharge sample (swab) is sent for further investigation.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
1. GANDHAK RASAYAN
It contains Shuddh Gandhak (Sulphur purified). Sulphur draws moisture from the environment into the skin. It removes the dead surface of the skin and reveals the healthy skin from underneath. It is an excellent rejuvenator. It helps in removing toxins out from the body and reduces inflammation and other symptoms of infection. It is effective in treating liver disorders and various skin diseases. It is a digestive and carminative and also an excellent remedy to flush out toxins from the body. It acts like a catalyst and proven very helpful in curing intestinal worms and enlargement of spleen.
Dose – 2 tablets twice in a day with plain water after meals only.
2. PRADRANTAK CHURNA
Pradrantak Churna is very effectual formulation in controlling painful menstruation, pre menstrual syndrome (PMS) and ovarian cysts. It helps to reduce pain as well as inflammation. It does not cause any side effects and can be consumed along with any other ongoing medications. It contains a blend of pure and natural herbs. It is a natural treatment for uterine fibroids, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, irregular cycle, leucorrhoea and many other related problems.
Dose – 1 teaspoon thrice a day after meals with plain water.
3. NEEM CAPSULES

WHAT ARE THE HOME REMEDIES FOR BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS?
- Drink a glass full of milk mixed with turmeric daily to get rid of symptoms of bacterial vaginosis.
- Dip tea bags in warm water and let them cool. Wash with same water to have relief from itching and burning sensation.
- Eat couple of garlic cloves daily as it is an effective natural anti bacterial.
- Eat a bowl of yogurt every day until infection disappears or soak cotton plugs in yogurt and keep in to the vagina or apply it over the inflamed area. Lactobacilli content in yogurt helps in treating urogenital infections whether ingested or applied topically.
- Soak a clean cloth in cold water and place over the outer area that gives relief from burning sensation.
- Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins out from the body.
WHAT IS THE DIET AND LIFE STYLE FOR BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS?
Avoid all types of food items which disturb the ph of vagina. High saturated fat diet, sweet items, white bread, junk food etc may increase the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis. Increase consumption of broccoli, cabbage, spinach, kiwi, carrot, turnip and high fiber food.
Wear cotton’s undergarments, change daily and wash with antibacterial soaps, Use good qualities sanitary pads, wash the external part properly after intercourse, don’t use bath tubs or else clean those regularly to avoid the infection.
