Ayurvedic Treatment For Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)
ABSTRACT
NAFLD Non-alcoholic fatty liver is a condition characterised by fat deposition in the liver. This disease is most commonly seen in both adults and adolescents. According to reports, lifestyle and dietary changes can vary in the human body. Our body systems can be influenced by the food we eat and environmental changes. Rising levels of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain metabolic disorders may result in fatty livers and major liver injuries, which may necessitate organ transplantation or be fatal.
INTRODUCTION
Nearly 25% of the population suffers from chronic fatty liver disease. NAFLD is defined as the presence of macrovesicular steatosis in hepatocytes. Certain chemical drugs and chemotherapies can trigger this reaction. People who consume small amounts of alcohol are less likely to have a fatty liver, but alcohol should be avoided because it can cause a variety of liver disorders.
SYMPTOMS
NAFLD often does not show any symptoms in the early stages. A few symptoms may involve
- Pain in the upper right abdomen
- Tiredness
- Weakness
- Jaundice: yellowing of eyes, skin
- Inflamed belly
- Red palms
- Enlarged spleen
- Itchy skin
- Indigestion
- Obesity
- Low HDL ( good cholesterol levels are low)
- High blood pressure
- Type 2 diabetes
- High lipids, such as triglycerides, in the blood
CAUSES
The most common cause of NAFLD is excessive fat in the body, type 2 diabetes, higher cholesterol levels, and alcohol consumption; rapid weight loss sometimes; and malnutrition may also contribute to fatty liver. It has also been seen that when the liver does not break down fats as usually, through this too much fat will accumulate. However, insulin resistance occurs when the cells do not take up the sugar in response to the hormone insulin.
Is NAFLD Disease Curable?
If a person is facing NAFLD, the basic symptoms might be controlled by certain medications. Moreover, there is no such surgical treatment available for fatty liver. One must intake a number of chemical drugs and for liver-associated problems that can even affect the other organs too.
Furthermore, to avoid all these changes and to limit the use of drugs, Ayurveda gives us the best solution for fatty liver. By limiting the dietary factors, following the strict rules of Ayurveda can be more beneficial than taking strong chemical drugs. One can also go with the home remedies before proceeding towards the alternative treatments. Fatty liver can be reversed with the correct use of ayurvedic medicines, as only guided by the practitioner.
TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA
The liver is the only organ where excessive fat accumulation can lead to a condition called fatty liver disease, or steatosis. Here in Ayurveda, for liver, Yakrit is the word given, and Pliha is spleen. They both are the interrelated organs, which serve for the same physiology and are related to the formation and maturation of blood. Yakrit is said to be the place of origin or the centre of production and maintenance of pitta.
