Ayurvedic Treatment Of Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak
If you have wandered about the thing that settles down in your head after having taken hours doing your rangoli, it’s nothing but your CSF.
Cerebrospinal fluid or CSF is the clear fluid which supports the brain and spinal cord. It supports these vital organs from injury by acting as a shock absorber while also being the medium for nutrition delivery for the brain. This fluid is generated within the ventricles of the brain and undergoes circulation within the cranium for undertaking its optimal function. Now when this same CSF finds a gap to seep through the circulatory route, the condition is termed as CSF leak.
CSF leak is a serious condition where this fluid escapes through a small tear or opening in the outermost layer of the brain or the dura mater into other subdural spaces. The brain and the associated structures are well cushioned in the CSF, owing to its loss, the individual can experience headache and lowered pressure within the skull. The loss of fluid from skull is a rare manifestation may be due to a trauma, injury, some cranial surgery, skull base defects and other idiopathic conditions.
Causes and treatment
Women and obese individuals are more prone to CSF leaks and most often misjudged as migraine or sinusitis. The most commonly experienced signs are Headache that occurs with change in position of the head, changes in auditory and visual perceptions, nausea and vomiting, increased photosensitivity and balance issues. According to the complexity of the condition, clear watery drainage from one side of the nose, salty to metallic taste in the mouth and anosmia may be involved. Meningitis is seen associated with CSF leaks as a complication.
The general treatment protocol adopted for this condition includes bed rest for a few days, Hydrations, caffeine infusions and saline infusions. The patient is asked to not insert the body for it may induce more fluid escape. Depending on the size of the tear, corrective surgeries or methods are adopted to seal the injury.
ROLE OF AYURVEDA IN SUCH CONDITIONS
Just like every other condition, a disease occurs in the body either due to derangements in the bodily entities or because of an external factor. Here CSF leak is also again due to the misarranments in the bodily entities of the Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The Vata is associated with the mechanism of circulation within the brain, while the Kapha entity generates the CSf and finally the Pitta entity manages the cell health of the brain through the medium of CSF. it is always important to maintain the homeostasis of the humour to propel maximum functionality of the same. When we breathe and move around, CSF is pumped inside the spine. It may be a coincidence that the practice of yoga employs breathing, movement and spinal flexibility all of which directly have an impact on the CSF flow and thus the health of the brain.
The general treatment for all diseases includes purification and pacifying therapies. Nasya is the most used mode of administration for diseases of the head and neck including CSF leak, where medicated ghee or oil is administered through the nose of the patient. Methods like Taila Dharana (holding oil in the head), Dhumanapa or smoking of medicated cigars. All these are the external therapies advanced while the internally oral medications including decoctions or capsules etc, whatever suits the condition is administered.
