Ayurvedic View On APLA Syndrome And Its Treatment With Herbs
ABSTRACT
Blood clotting is a mechanism which takes place whenever there is bleeding in the body whether it can be external or internal. Blood clots are formed at the site of injury to prevent it from bleeding. Platelets are responsible for the clotting of the blood by the action of 13 clotting factors which are present in the blood. Blood clots are formed of proteins, fibrins and mass of blood. These clots are responsible for the cessation of the blood flow from the body. When these blood clots form in excess in the body it can cause many disorders like deep vein thrombosis, Varicose veins etc. Syndrome which is responsible for the formation of blood clots in excess is APLA syndrome. We are going to read about this disorder in this article.
INTRODUCTION
It is known as Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. It is an autoimmune disorder in which there is formation of antibodies in the blood and the body’s immune system creates antibodies by mistake which lead to the clotting of the blood. Phospholipids are the lipids which are found in all the cells and when there are antibodies they attack the cells due to which there is formation of clots. This disorder can occur to a person with APS antibodies but may not produce any symptoms.
This can occur to anyone of any age group but mostly it affects the women who are having other autoimmune disorders.
It is also known by different names like
- Anticardiolipin antibody syndrome
- Antiphospholipid syndrome
- APL syndrome
- Hughes Syndrome
- Lupus anticoagulant syndrome
CAUSES OF APLA SYNDROME
Main cause of the antiphospholipid syndrome is the formation of antibodies by the immune system. When the antibodies damage the phospholipids of the cell walls of the blood vessels or any cells in the body it causes bleeding which clots the blood and forms clots in the arteries and veins of the body.
SYMPTOMS OF APLA SYNDROME
The main signs and symptoms associated with the APLA syndrome are due to the abnormal clotting of the blood. Various signs and symptoms arising from the blood clots are depending on the size and location of the blood clot in the body.
It can also cause death if the clot enters the vital organs and hampers the blood supply like if it enters in the brain, heart, kidney, lungs and limbs.
Major symptoms like:
- Pain in the chest and dyspnoea
- Swelling, pain and redness in the hands and legs
- Recurrent headaches
- Change in the speech
- Discomfort in the upper body like in arms, back, chest and jaw etc.
- Nausea (feeling of vomiting)
- Memory loss
- Heart valve problems
- Red rashes on the wrist and knees
It can lead to many life threatening disorders like:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Stroke
- Heart attack
- Pulmonary embolism
- Pregnant women can have pre-eclampsia and other pregnancy related disorders due to the presence of APS antibodies
- People with APS antibodies can also have thrombocytopenia
RISK FACTORS FOR APLA SYNDROME
- Women are more at risk than men
- People having other auto-immune disorder
- Cigarette smoking
- Bed rest for long period
- During pregnancy and after the delivery
- Taking birth control pills and hormone pills
- Diseases related to cancer and kidney disease
- Having infections like syphilis, HIV, hepatitis C etc
- Medications like hydralazine, quinidine can also cause APLA syndrome
- Familial history
DIAGNOSIS OF APLA SYNDROME
Different diagnostic techniques can be used like:
- Liquid phase coagulation assay
- Solid phase ELISA test
- Lupus anticoagulant test
TREATMENT OF THE APLA SYNDROME
Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome has no cure, most of the time it doesn’t require any treatment if there are no symptoms associated. Main goal of the treatment is to decrease the size of the clots and prevent the clots from forming.
Medications like anticoagulants and blood thinners are used for this. The most common blood thinners are heparin and warfarin, anticoagulants can have aspirin. These drugs are used as symptomatic treatment.
AYURVEDIC CORRELATION
It can be correlated as stroto dushti of raktavaha strotas (blockage of blood channels) and all the autoimmune disorders occurs in the body due to the accumulation of the ama in the body (undigested food) when this ama remains still in the stomach for more duration it converts into the toxins and these toxins travel through the channels and occupy the blood channels of the body.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENT
As modern science doesn’t have any treatment for this disease only a symptomatic treatment but in ayurveda it can be treated if we treat the aama dosha of the body and clear out the channels of the blood. This can be done with the help of various methods shodhan kriyas (purification methods) like vaman (induced emesis), virechan (herbal purgation) and medicines which will digest the ama dosha of the body and help in reduce the size of the clots and prevent the formation of clots.

CONCLUSION
APLA syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which there is the formation of blood clots in the blood vessels due the formation of antibodies which destroys the cell wall as it is made up of phospholipids. This usually produces no symptoms but it can be life-threatening when it involves vital organs like heart, brain and limbs. Modern science doesn’t have much treatment so you can opt for the ayurvedic treatment as ayurvedic treatment will treat this disease from its roots and this will not reoccur.
