LEPTOSPIROSIS IN HUMANS – SYMPTOMS, CAUSES & HERBAL MEDICINE
ABSTRACT
There are many types of infections and one of them is bacterial infection being a proliferative type that can spread anywhere in the body. It only has a single cell and most of the people who are diagnosed with bacterial infection do not get sick in most cases. Not all bacterias are harmful; some of them help in digesting food or destroying cells that make you sick. These types of healthy bacteria are found in cheese as well as yogurt. There are bacteria which can have a bad effect on the body, sometimes resulting in pneumonia or even meningitis. In this article we are going to discuss one of them known as Leptospirosis, a type of bacterial infection along with its alternative treatment with herbal remedies.
WHAT IS LEPTOSPIROSIS?
Leptospirosis is the kind of bacteria known as spirochaete and it belongs to the genus of leptospira. This can affect both humans as well as animals and is mostly associated with having poor hygiene. It has the capability to increase the conditions like meningitis which could be very life threatening. This can easily spread from one person to the other and also through open wounds. The animals that can lead to transmission of the disease are shrunks, foxes and rats as well. It is estimated by the World Health Organization that 10 in every 100,000 are affected with Leptospirosis.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF LEPTOSPIROSIS?
The clinical features of Leptospirosis differ depending on the organ affected by the bacteria. Ths symptoms might appear suddenly and the incubation period of Leptospirosi is 2 to 30 days. Here are some of the signs seen in the patients including
MILD LEPTOSPIROSIS
This might include signs like
- Fever
- Child
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Pain in muscles
- Rahes
- Jaundice
- Irritated eyes
Most of the people in these cases recover within a week but 10 percent of them might develop severe signs.
Leptospirosis can be of two phases including the first phase which can lead to fever, headache, chills, vomiting and diarrhea and they can easily recover from it. But there are chances that the patient might have the symptoms again which might lead to liver and kidney failure.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES FOR LEPTOSPIROSIS?
Leptospirosis is mainly caused by the particular bacterium known as Leptospira interrogans. This bacteria is present and carried by many of the animals and it lives in their kidneys. It is then ended up in the water and soil by the urine that they pass. When you are around the soil or the water where the infected animal has peed then that bacteria might enter into your body. This can easily enter through the broken area of the skin including wounds or scratches. There is also the possibility that it can also enter through the mouth, nose or the genitals. There is no possibility to get it from another human being but there are chances that it might pass on from mother to the child through breastfeeding. It can also pass from one human being to another through sexual intercourse.
People living outdoors or who spend much more time around the animals are more at risk. If you are doing these jobs then you are more at risk including
- Veterinarian
- Farmer
- Slaughterhouse worker
- Underground workers like people working at mine or in the sewer
- Military person
Along with that if you do rafting, camping or swimming then you are also at risk. This type of bacteria is mostly found in warm places including Africa, Australia, Central and South America, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
HOW CAN LEPTOSPIROSIS BE DIAGNOSED IN HUMANS?
Leptospirosis can be easily tested through the simple blood test or examination of the blood for antibodies. These are the organisms which help in fighting the bacteria and there are chances to have false positives if you had the disease before. The doctor might also tell you to get a DNA test as well.

- Avoid getting in contact with the animals, especially from the wild rats because they are the main carriers for bacteria. Even 20% of the wild rats living in the western world might have this. Always be careful if you have to come in contact with the wild rats.
- Most animals nowadays are vaccinated so there is less risk of having Leptospirosis. But if they are ill then avoid getting bitten by them or getting in contact with their body fluid.
