How can Pyloric Stenosis be Managed Naturally in Ayurveda?
Abstract
Pyloric stenosis is a rare health condition which typically affects infants. In this condition, the opening between the stomach and the first part of the small intestine becomes thick, due to which the digestive process gets affected because the food cannot enter the small intestine. Pyloric stenosis can be managed naturally with the help of some beneficial herbal products available from the renowned herbal manufacturing company, Planet Ayurveda.
Introduction
Pyloric stenosis is a condition which generally affects babies less than six months of age. Nearly one million babies are affected by pyloric stenosis in India every year, with the number of boys affected by the condition being four times higher than that of girls. The condition is more common in first-born babies, and in babies who are born prematurely. Pyloric stenosis is a condition which very rarely affects adults.
Pyloric stenosis is marked by the thickening and abnormal swelling of the pylorus- the muscular valve between the lower part of the stomach and the initial portion of the small intestine. The thickening of the pylorus prevents the food from entering the small intestine from the stomach, thereby hampering the digestive process.
Babies affected by pyloric stenosis frequently vomit out the milk (or other feed) forcefully, because of which they often appear to be hungry all the time. Frequent vomiting can lead to dehydration due to loss of fluid and can cause a mineral (electrolyte) imbalance. The condition can significantly affect the growth and development of the affected babies.
Pyloric stenosis is one of the few disorders which necessitate surgery in newborn babies. The disorder was first described as a health condition affecting infants in 1888. The first surgical procedure for treating the condition was performed by Conrad Ramstedt in 1912.
Cause of Pyloric Stenosis
The exact cause of pyloric stenosis is not clear. The condition is not present at birth; it generally develops a few weeks after birth.
It is believed that pyloric stenosis has a ‘multifactorial trait.’ The condition involves several factors such as genetic and environmental factors which can cause either a congenital anatomic narrowing or functional hypertrophy of the pyloric sphincter muscle in affected babies.
Symptoms of Pyloric Stenosis
The symptoms of pyloric stenosis mostly become noticeable in affected babies within 3-5 weeks after birth. Some of the main symptoms are:
- Forceful vomiting after feeding
- Blood in the vomit
- Persistent hunger due to frequent vomiting
- Dehydration
- Belching
- Colic or stomach contractions
- Change in bowel movements
- Weight loss
