AYURVEDIC VIEW OF DYSMENORRHEA

Dysmenorrhoea as per ayurveda is known as Kashtartava. This condition is tridoshaj which means the vitiation of tridosha (vata, pitta, kapha) occurs in this disease). It involves derangement of apana vayu and vyana vayu with that of vitiation of Rasa Dhatu (bodily fluids). Nowadays women are experiencing challenges caused by mithya ahara (wrong diet), mithya vihara (wrong lifestyle), malnutrition and over exertion. All these dietary and lifestyle habits cause vikriti (vitiation) in rutuchakra (menstrual cycle). Ayurveda proposes ritucharya (seasonal recommendations) and dincharya (daily regimen), dietary modulations along with yoga such as asanas, meditation and pranayama on the regular basis to manage the symptoms of Dysmenorrhea. Other than this as the condition is vata predominating, uttarbasti, anuvasana basti, matra basti and garbhashaya bali aushadhi can also be administered. Let us discuss below all these managements in detail.

1. Uttarbasti

This is the process which comes under Panchakarma therapy. So to alleviate vata dosha and to regulate the balance of vata dosha in Kashtartava, herbal decoctions are administered through the vaginal tract. These herbal decoctions contain cleansing and nourishing properties.

2. Anuvasana Basti

This is one of the best treatments for vatavyadhi. As vata dosha is the main cause of dysmenorrhea so we have to balance the vitiated vata dosha for alleviating the symptoms of Dysmenorrhea. This procedure includes administration of medicated oils via guda marga (anal canal). One of the best oils used in this case is Ksheerbala taila.

3. Matra Basti

This is a type of enema in  which less quantity of oils is administered via anal canal. This can be given at any age, any time in any person. So the one who is unable to take Anuvasana basti can take matra basti without worrying about side effects.

4. Garbhashya bali aushadhi (Uterus nourishing herbs
