How to Treat Frozen Shoulder in Ayurveda
Frozen shoulder in medical terms is considered adhesive capsulitis which is characterized by a condition that affects the joints of the shoulder. This condition limits the motion of shoulders. According to the anatomy of the human body, the human shoulder is made up of 3 different types of bones that form a ball and socket joint in the shoulder. These three bones are Humerus (Upper arm), Scapula (Shoulder blade) and the Clavicle (collarbone). The Shoulder joint is surrounded by tissues that hold each and everything together in the shoulder. This is known as the shoulder capsule. The tissues that are usually present in the joint of the shoulder are replaced by scar tissues and the normal tissues become tighter and thicker. Frozen shoulder is usually characterized by stiffness and pain that develops slowly and this gets worse and it finally goes away after some time. This pain can take anywhere between 1 year to 3 years. When a person is suffering from this disorder, then a very small amount of synovial fluid is present in the shoulder which is not enough for the lubrication of joints. In Ayurveda, frozen shoulder is known as Apabahuka which usually affects the Shoulder joint (Amsa sandhi). This disorder is mainly due to the unbalancing of Vata and Kapha doshas.
Signs and Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder
The main symptoms of a frozen shoulder are pain and stiffness. Frozen shoulder (Apabahuka) develops gradually and in the three stages. Each stage can last for many months:
1. Freezing Stage
During this stage, any movement of the shoulder causes pain, and the person is unable to move its shoulder normally. This stage can last from six to nine months.
2. Frozen Stage
During this stage, Pain in the shoulder begins to diminish. However, the shoulder becomes stiffer and the affected person faces difficulty in the movement of the shoulder. This stage can last up to twelve months.
3. Thawing Stage
This is the last stage of the Frozen shoulder and in this stage, the motion of the shoulder begins to improve. This stage can last from 6 months to 2 years.
The other common symptom of Apabahuka is an achy or dull pain in the affected shoulder. In some cases, the pain gets worsens during the night and a person is unable to sleep.
Diagnosis of Frozen Shoulder
Whenever you observe any of the above-mentioned symptoms then you must see a doctor prevent this disorder at its earlier stages. During the physical examination, the doctor will order you to move your arm and check the pain in the shoulder. By doing this doctor will evaluate the range of motion of the patient’s arm. Sometimes, the physician will inject any anaesthetic in the shoulder of the patient to detect the active and passive motion of the patient’s arm. Frozen shoulder can be detected from the symptoms but the doctor may also order some imaging tests such as MRI and X-ray to confirm the disorder.
