Abstract
Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is an uncommon disease. It is the disease of long bones and mainly occurs in large breeds of dogs. It occurs due to destruction of bones. This disease is also called metaphyseal osteodystrophy. The dogs which grow rapidly are mostly affected by this disease and show various symptoms such as swelling in the joints, pain and high grade fever. Introduction
Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is a bone disorder and mainly occurs in medium and large breed dogs. This disease mainly occurs in long bones such as tibia, radius and ulna. Lack of vitamin c in diet causes this disease. The breeds which are more prone to this disease are:- Weimaraner, Standard poodle, Saint Bernard, Rottweiler, Large breed dogs, Labrador retriever, Kuvasz, Irish wolfhound, Irish setter, German shepherd dog, Doberman pinscher, and Australian kelpie. The cause of disease is currently unknown. In this disease the blood flow to the bone decreases and leads to necrosis, inflammation and failure of ossification. The average age of a dog when affected by this disease is 8-16 weeks and male along with female dogs are equally affected by Hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
Symptoms
Dogs who show more signs and symptoms indicate the case is more severe. Following are the symptoms shown by dogs in case of hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
- Swelling in the long bones
- Clubbing
- Pain
- Fever – fever range from more than 106 F
- Depression
- Painful,swollen and warm leg bones
- Diarrhoea
- Presence of bumps on the skin and some are filled with pus
- Inflammation in vagina
Causes
Exact cause of hypertrophic osteodystrophy is unknown but some causes are as follows
- Deficiency of vitamin c in diet
- Excessive calcium in the diet
- Infection
- Genetic
Diagnose
- Physical examination: swelling, presence of bumps on the skin etc.
- Radiography: changes mainly occur in case of metaphysis of long bones.
- X Rays: Shows presence of a darker line which indicates death of the bone
- Blood test
- Urine Analysis
Treatment
Hypertrophic osteodystrophy is a very painful condition so it is very important to take care of your dog. Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs are used to control the high pain. If gastrointestinal tract is involved then veterinarians give probiotics to the dog. In some cases surgery can also be performed. Exercise should be limited for a short period of time. But with this treatment some dogs may develop pneumonia, fever, diarrhoea and other side effects. So you need to follow ayurvedic treatment for hypertrophic osteodystrophy.
