Latent Autoimmune Diabetes Treatment in Ayurveda
Abstract
Latent autoimmune diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the adults elderly suffer from the gradual onset of diabetes. There are multiple types of diabetes like type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes etc. In Latent autoimmune diabetes, there are the same clinical features that are found in type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes because of this it is also known as type 1.5 diabetes. It is mostly found in type 2 diabetic patients. Latent autoimmune diabetes patients contain some types of anti-beta cell antibodies and stop insulin synthesis much more slowly than type 1 diabetes patients. In this article, we are going to discuss the cause, symptoms and treatment of latent autoimmune diabetes.
INTRODUCTION
Latent autoimmune diabetes is autoimmune diabetes in adults in which features of both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are present. So this is also known as type 1.5 diabetes and for glycemic control, it does need insulin at least for the first six months after diagnosis.
TYPE 1 DIABETES
When the pancreas produces little or no insulin, known as type 1 diabetes. It is a chronic disease. It mostly appears in adolescence.
TYPE 2 DIABETES
When the body does not use insulin properly, known as type 2 diabetes. It manages changes in lifestyle and physical activities.
CAUSES OF LATENT AUTOIMMUNE DIABETES IN ADULT
When the pancreas is damaged by antibodies and not producing enough insulin, which slowly destroys the insulin-producing cells in your pancreas it causes latent autoimmune diabetes in adults. Genetic factors may also be involved. In latent autoimmune disease, when the pancreas is damaged, the body produces beta cells in the pancreas, just like type 1 cells. It mainly occurs in ages greater than 30.

- Nocturia
- Polyuria
- Polydipsia
- Tingling in the feet

DIAGNOSIS OF LATENT AUTOIMMUNE DIABETES IN ADULTS
- GADA (Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Autoantibodies) antibody test – this test is mainly used for latentautoimmune diabetes.
- C-peptide – to find out the level of insulin produced by the body
- Fasting plasma glucose test
- Random plasma glucose test
- Urinary sugar test
- Glucose tolerance test
AYURVEDIC ASPECT OF LATENT AUTOIMMUNE DIABETES IN ADULT
जात: प्रमेही मधुमेहिनो वा न साध्य उक्त: स हि बीजदोषात।
ये चापि केचित कुलजा विकारा भवन्ति तांश्च प्रवदन्त्य साध्यान।। (च. चि. ६/५७)
According to Acharya Charak, in this shalok latent autoimmune diabetes is correlated with sahaj prameh (Hereditary diabetes). The children of a father suffering from spontaneous premeha or diabetes are incurable because of being born from genetic defects. It is a congenital diabetes.
NIDAN (CAUSES) OF LATENT AUTOIMMUNE DIABETES IN ADULT
आस्यासुखं स्वप्नसुखं दधीनि ग्राम्योैदकानूपरसाः पयांसि।
नवान्नपानं गुडवैकृत च प्रमेहहेतुः कफकृच्च सर्वं।। (च.चि. ४/६)
- Excessive sleep
- Inactivity
- Eating excessive curd
- Excessive intake of marshy animal meat.
- Excessive intake of aquatic animal meat.
- Excessive intake of domestic animal meat.
- Jaggery
- New grains
- Excessive intake of food items which increase kapha dosha
SAMPRAPTI (PATHOPHYSIOLOGY) OF LATENT AUTOIMMUNE DIABETES
दोषो हि बस्तिं समुपेत्य मूत्रं संदूष्य मेहाञ्जनयेद यथास्वम।। (च. चि. ६/६)
According to Acharya Charak, the Vata, Pitta or Kapha, any one of these doshas gets aggravated and reaches the bladder and contaminates the urine, giving rise to its symptoms.

Discharge of contaminated and excessive urine is a symptom of all types of prameh.
MANAGEMENT OF LATENT AUTOIMMUNE DIABETES)
- Sanshodhan chikitsa (Purification) should be done first and followed by Brihana chikitsa (nourishment) in sathula pramehi (obese patient).
- Brihana chikitsa should be given in krisha pramehi (thin patient) .
- Snehan (Oil application)
- Savedanam (Hot seduction) is contraindicated in prameha (diabetes)

1. DIA-BETA PLUS
Dia-beta plus is a polyherbal capsule which is formulated by planet ayurveda by using Gurmaar (Gymnema sylvestre), Karela (Momordica charantia), Saptrangi (Salacia oblonga), Vijaysar (Pterocarpus marsupium), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) and Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum). It helps remove all the toxins from the body and is also helpful in controlling the lipid profile in blood. It is an antioxidant and immunomodulator. It helps in regaining body strength. It prevents the fluctuation of sugar levels in the blood.
Dosage- With warm water, 2 capsules twice daily before meals.
2. KARELA CAPSULES
Karela capsules are single herbal capsules formulated by planet Ayurveda by using Karela (Momordica charantia). This is bitter and astringent in taste. It is helpful to reduce blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels. It maintains a healthy glucose level. It helps in purifying the blood.
Dosage- With warm water, 2 capsules twice daily before meals.
3. MADHUMEHANTAK CHURNA
Madhumehantak churna is a polyherbal churna which is formulated by planet ayurveda by using Saptrangi (Salacia chinensis), Vijaysar (Pterocarpus marsupium), Bilva patra (Aegle marmelos), Gurmaar (Gymnema sylvestre), Darulhadi (Berberis aristata), Methi (Trigonella foenum graceum), Neem Patra (Azadirachta indica), Karela (Momordica charantia), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Jamun (Syzygium cumini), Sadabahar (Lochnera rosea) and Babool (Acacia arabica). Neem patra is carminative, anti-bacterial and anti-diabetic. This jamun controls the frequency of urine and helps in lowering the sugar level both in urine and blood. Tulsi is used while allocating kapha and vata it aggravates pitta. It helps purify the blood.
Dosage- one tablespoon twice daily with warm water before food.
4. FENUGREEK CAPSULES
Fenugreek capsules are single herbal capsules formulated by planet Ayurveda by using Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum). Fenugreek is bitter in taste and hot in effect. It pacifies vata and kapha. It acts as an anti-diabetic herb. It also lowers the serum lipid level and helps in weight reduction.
