It is more common in people who belong to lower income groups, chronic alcoholics and mental health patients. Stress also triggers short-term or acute insomnia. According to researchers, there seems to be an association between depression, anxiety and insomnia. The exact cause of insomnia is not known. Physical discomfort like hot, cold, noise etc., over working, stressful situations like divorce, death of a loved one etc., drug abuse, cigarette smoking, intake of caffeine prior to sleep and alcohol intoxication may case insomnia.

Diagnosis of insomnia may start with a thorough medical history of the individual and subsequent examination performed by a physician. Many medical and psychiatric conditions can be responsible for insomnia.
Treatment of insomnia mostly includes sleeping pills and other sedatives to get rest. But it has been observed that all sedative drugs have the potential of causing dependence. The individual cannot sleep without drugs and becomes addictive. Sedatives such as benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine drugs have a number of side-effects such as day time fatigue, motor vehicle accidents, cognitive impairments and even sudden fall.
