Natural Treatment of Jaundice
Jaundice is caused by a build-up of a substance called ‘bilirubin’ in the blood and tissues of the body. Jaundice is characterized by yellow color of the skin, mucus membranes and eyes. The yellow coloring comes from bilirubin which is a by-product of old red blood cells. In medical terms, bilirubin is a waste product that is produced when red blood cells break down. Human blood cells have a lifespan of 120 days. After this, they are broken down and replaced with new cells. The bilirubin is transported in the bloodstream to the liver where specialized cells help to combine it with bile juice. Bile is stored in the gall bladder and is released into the digestive system through biliary system. The bile is converted into urobilinogen by bacteria inside the digestive system which is passed out of the body in urine or in stools.
It is bilirubin that gives urine – light yellow color and stools – dark brown color. Jaundice indicates some problem with the liver, gallbladder or pancreas. Infections, drugs, cancer, blood disorders, gallstones etc. can lead to jaundice. The common sign of jaundice is the yellowish discoloration of the skin and the sclera of the eyes in the affected person. Other symptoms may include itching of the skin, dark brown colored urine, pale and pasty stools, abdominal pain, headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weakness. There are a variety of other symptoms which can only be recognized and diagnosed as the signs of jaundice. Indication of high bilirubin in the blood, ineffective liver function in removing the bilirubin and rapid destruction of hemoglobin may reveal a particular type of jaundice called ‘obstructive jaundice’ and it occurs in many adults. This type of jaundice is a silent killer and needs to be diagnosed with proper clinical observation and consultation of a specialist doctor.
Treatment of jaundice depends on the cause of the underlying condition and other related complications. Treatment may consist of medicines with intravenous fluids, antibiotics or blood transfusions. Surgical treatment may be required in severe cases of jaundice. Most patients opt for natural treatment as they are unable to bear the side-effects produced by allopathic drugs.
As per Ayurveda, treatment of jaundice is based on natural herbs. Jaundice is considered as an imbalance of pitta, one of the three body doshas. The intestinal region is believed to be full of toxins which cause the imbalance. Ayurveda need these toxins to be flushed out, to restore balance and bring the immune system back to normal. Certain diet precautions are also necessary for treatment. Chocolates, cakes, ice cream, spicy food, alcohol and non-vegetarian food should be totally avoided. Recommended foods constitute vegetables such as tomatoes, radish and dry fruits such as dried date, almonds etc.
