Neisseria Gonorrhoea Infection – Treat With Herbal Remedies
ABSTRACT
Gonorrhea is an infection which is caused by sexually transmitted bacteria which infects both males and females. Sexually transmitted disease is also known as veneral disease which usually spreads infections by sexual activity, especially vaginal intercourse and anal sex. Certain bacterial infections include Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis. It can usually pass from pregnant women to infants before or after birth. Many STDs can easily be transmitted through the mucous membrane of penis, vulva and urinary tract. It is suggested that safer sex such as use of condoms is the reliable way of decreasing the risk of sexually transmitted disease. It can even be transmitted by body fluids, blood transfusions. Medical workers, hemophiliacs and drug users are at higher risk of this disease. Sometimes it is left to be asymptomatic and in women it can cause the serious pelvic inflammatory disease. Every year around 20 million new STD infections occur and half of them happen between the age of 15-34 year. It causes many symptoms such as bumps and warts on the genital areas, discharge from genitals and sometimes painful urination with frequent weight loss. HPV (human papillomavirus) is one of the most common viral STDs which can lead to cervical cancer. In this article we are going to discuss in detail about its causes, symptoms and its ayurvedic management.
INTRODUCTION
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is also known as Gonococcus. It is a gram negative dipplococci bacteria and is caused by sexually transmitted genitourinary infection gonorrhea and other form of gonoccocal disease including septic arthritis and gonococcal ophthalmia neonatorum. It is oxidase-positive and aerobic, which survives phagocytosis and grows inside neutrophils. Gonorrhea is most commonly spread through vaginal, oral and anal sex, babies can also be infected during childbirth. In males it usually affects the urethra, rectuma and throat region whereas in females it affects the cervix which marks the dividing line between the lower reproductive tract and upper tract. The cervical infection can be symptomatic and asymptomatic but without treatment it can spread and ascend to upper tract includes fallopian tube and endometrium which further leads to dead gonococcal transmission , and in fallopian tube it leads to Salpingitis risk of developing ectopic pregnancy. Reinfection is possible if its ability to evade the immune system by varying the surface proteins and usually resembles the shape of coffee beans, is usually isolated on Thayer martin agar in the atmosphere which is enriched with carbon dioxide.
FACTS
It affects both men and women with equal potency.It only spreads while having unprotected sex, as the infection can not be spread through normal physical contact as the bacteria cannot survive outside the body for long period of time.The bacteria usually grows in the reproductive tract and the throat.It is preventable.The symptoms are not seen right after acquiring the infection.This infection can be treated with antibiotics.If the infection is left untreated it can lead to infertility and spread to the bloodstream.The infection can be cured.Pregnant women should be more cautious about this infection. One must slow down the sexual activites after treatment.Testing for gonorrhea is simple and painless.
PATHOLOGY
N. gonorrhoeae infect the columnar epithelium , because stratified squamous epithelium is resistant to invasion. Mucosal invasion by gonococci bacteria results in an inflammatory response which produces a purulent exudate which consists of serum and desquamated epithelium. The endotoxin exhibits the cytotoxicity causing sloughing of the epithelial cells, when endotoxins activate it leads to acute inflammatory response. It ascends to urogenital tract and pelvic inflammatory disease in post-pubertal females. It further invades lymphatics and blood vessels which causes inguinal lymphadenopathy and disseminated gonococcal infections. When the immune system gets involved it causes local and systemic infections. The gonococcus bacteria first attach to host cells and adhere to microvilli by hair-like protein (pilli) and show antigenic variation that aids in escape from the immune system for different cell receptors.
CAUSES
This STD comes from bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It can pass through any kind of sexual contact includes
- Anal intercourse
- Oral intercourse
- Vaginal intercourse
It can be spread if one comes in contact with the infected part such as penis, vagina and mouth. It can easily be spread through vaginal delivery but is prevented in babies who are born with C- Section.
SYMPTOMS
It can affect any site of the body but commonly appears in the genital tract of the body.
Affecting genital tract it includes
In Males
- Painful urination
- Pus like discharge from tip of the penis
- Swelling in testicles.
- Soreness in anal region
- Pain during bowel movement
- Rectal bleeding
- Discoloration at the opening of penis
- Increased vaginal discharge (green, cream color)
- Pain during urination
- Vaginal bleeding during vaginal intercourse
- Abdominal and pelvic pain.
- Painful bowel movement
- Urge to urinate more frequently
In other sites of the body
- Rectum- it includes anal itching, spots of bright red colour and strains during bowel movements
- Eyes- It causes eye pain, sensitivity to light and pus like discharge from both eyes.
- Throat- Sore throat with swollen lymph nodes in neck region
- Joints- If more than one joint is affected it causes septic arthritis, joints may feel warm, red and swollen during movements.

RISK FACTORS
- Having a new partner
- Having more than one partner
- Having sexuallly transmitted infection
TREATMENT
- Adults can be treated with antibiotics ceftriaxone, and can be given as an injection with oral Azithromycin.
- Who are allergic to Ceftriaxone, it might be treated with Injectable Gentamicin and oral azithromycin.
COMPLICATIONS
- Infertility in women – spreads to uterus and fallopian tube causing the pelvic inflammatory disease and cause complication in pregnancy.
- Infertility in men- It causes a small, coiled tube where the sperms duct are inflamed and this untreated epididymitis leads to infertility.
- Infection spreads to the joints and other areas of the body which causes fever, rash, skin sores and stiffness.
- Increased risk of HIV/AIDS.
- Causes complications in babies which can develop blindness, sores on the scalp and infections.
- Scarring of urethra.
PREVENTION
- Use a condom as it is the surest way to prevent the gonorrhoea
- Limit the number of sex partner
- Don’t have sex with someone who has sexually transmitted disease
- Regular screening of gonorrhoea
AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT
According to ayurveda, Gonorrhoea is correlated with Puyameha or sujjak. This is Pitta pradhan vyadhi which is usually caused by external factors known as Aagantuj vyadhi. It further leads to inflammation and redness of the urogenital tract. The organism is new to the human body which produces disease by entering and affecting the various parts of the body.
