Panchamrit Parpati – Ingredients, Method Of Preparation and Uses
Introduction
Panchamrit parpati is a classical formulation that is very effective in balancing pitta dosha. It is classically mentioned in Ras Tantrasara and siddha prayog sangraha. Firstly we will discuss what is pitta dosha? Our body is made up of three energies that are known as tridosha as per ayurveda. These are vata, pitta and kapha. Here we’re gonna discuss pitta dosha, pitta dosha refers to fire in our body. According to the ayurvedic texts pitta dosha is considered as heat in the body that fulfills all the needs to maintain a healthy metabolism. When we eat food it moves down to the stomach and gets digested by enzymes and hormones. These enzymes and hormones are also part of pitta dosha. So in short all the things in our body which plays a role in maintaining the metabolism. So if there is imbalance in pitta dosha, various types of diseases may occur. At last it is important to keep your pitta dosha in balance to have a healthy metabolism and healthy you.
Ingredients Used in Panchamrit Parpati
- Shuddha parad (processed mercury)
- Loha bhasma (calyx of iron)
- Abhrak bhasma (An ayurvedic mineral compound)
- Tamra bhasma (Calyx of copper)
- Shuddha gandhak (Purified sulphur)
Description Of Ingredients
1. Shuddha parad (Processed mercury)
Shuddha parada (processed mercury) is very effective in skin infections and skin diseases like vitiligo. In shuddha parad mercury is extracted by cinnabar which is commonly known as hingula. Then mercury is processed with betel leaf, ginger and triphala kwath (decoction). After that it is washed with kanji (fermented preparation) and then a shuddha parad is obtained from it. Shuddha parada helps in balancing tridosha (vata, pitta and kapha). Also shows a soothing effect that’s why it promotes skin health by curing skin diseases. Along with that it has some wonderful benefits such as- actions are – vrishya (aphrodisiac), balya (improves strength), rasayana (rejuvenating properties), aids wound healing, krimighna (kills worms and parasites in the body) and yogavahi (whenever added to another substance it carries the qualities of other substance).
2. Loha bhasma (Calyx of iron)
Loha Bhasma (Calyx of iron) includes nourishing benefits as it is cold in potency. This formulation aids in balancing kapha and pitta dosha. It has a number of benefits like- improves strength, provides immunity, radiant skin texture and complexion, enhances memory and intelligence, strengthens digestion and which in turn prevents a number of gastric problems such as bloating, vomiting, abdominal colic, liver disorders, respiratory disorders, etc.
3. Abhrak bhasma (An ayurvedic mineral compound)
Abhraka bhasma balances vata pitta and kapha dosha. This herbo-mineral formulation includes several health benefits like-Rasayana (rejuvenating properties), Medhya (improves memory), Balya (improves body strength), Deepana (enhances digestive fire), Pachana (promotes digestion), Rochana (aids to improve appetite), Vayasthapana (prevents process of aging), Anulomana (balances movement of vata dosha), Kasahara (Relieves cough), Shwasha (relieves respiratory disorders), etc.
4. Tamra bhasma (Calyx of copper)
It has great qualities to balance pitta dosha and promotes its normal activities. Also it reduces kapha dosha to a great extent. As we read earlier when pitta dosha is imbalanced or vitiated then there must be the occurrence of various pittaj conditions such as Rajtayukta pravahika (Ulcerative colitis), Sangrahni (IBS), Atisaar (Diarrhoea), Agnimandya (Dyspepsia), Vaman (Emesis), etc. so by pacifying pitta dosha tamra bhasma is beneficial in such diseases.
5. Shuddha gandhak (Purified sulphur)
Shuddha gandhak (purified sulphur) is very much effective in skin conditions due to its pitta pacifying and rakta prasadhan qualities. Also it is considered as a wonderful ayurvedic rasayana which means it aids in promoting general health. Shuddha gandhak is used as the best remedy in ayurveda for every type of skin conditions like psoriasis, itching, eczema and other skin infections.
Method Of Preparation
- Take Shuddha parada (processed mercury), Loha bhasma (calyx of iron), Abhrak bhasma (An ayurvedic mineral compound), Tamra bhasma (Calyx of copper) 2 parts and shuddha gandhaka (Purified sulphur) 8 parts.
- Mix all the ingredients well.
- Triturate these ingredients well until it turns into kajjali (black unshiny paste).
- Heat until it becomes liquefied and put it on a plain surface and press it with a plate. Now parpati is ready. Make it into powder form and preserve it in a dry and air-tightened jar.
Medicinal properties
Panchamrit parpati is very good at pacifying and promoting normal functions of pitta dosha. It includes ingredients such as Shuddha parad (processed mercury), Loha bhasma (calyx of iron), Abhrak bhasma (An ayurvedic mineral compound), Tamra bhasma (Calyx of copper) and Shuddha gandhak (Purified sulfur) that all are having pacifying effect on pitta dosha along with pacifying vata and kapha dosha. Also it has anti-microbial properties due to which it helps in alleviating skin conditions that are associated with infections such as scabies, eczema, etc. The ingredients such as shuddha parada and shuddha gandhak helps in promoting general health by acting as rasayana. So in short it promotes healthy digestion, prevents skin diseases and provides good general health.
Dosha karma (Effects on dosha)
It balances vata, pitta and kapha dosha.
Dosage
1-2 tab twice a day or as prescribed by a physician.

Rajtayukta pravahika (Ulcerative colitis), Sangrahni (IBS), Atisaar (Diarrhoea), Agnimandya (Dyspepsia), Vaman (Emesis), Bvasir (Piles), Jwara (Fever), Shoth (Swelling), kshaya (Chronic respiratory conditions and Tuberculosis), Pandu (Anaemia).
Side Effects
There is no side effect of this classical formulation if taken in the prescribed form. So take it under the prescribed form by the physician.
