Panosteitis in Dogs- Ayurvedic Aspect and Treatment
Abstract
As a new owner of a large-breed puppy, you may be amazed and entertained by the speed at which your furry friend can grow. Sometimes your dog may struggle with growing pains; those pains are called panosteitis. Panosteitis is a condition in which the long bones are primarily affected. Cause is still unknown but most experts say it may be caused by protein-rich food. Pain, inflammation or fever are the most common symptoms. Usually the younger ones like those who are around twenty-four months old are usually affected. Our holy Acharyas have already mentioned this disease years ago in our samhitas under the pashu chikitsa vibhag. In this article, let’s discuss its causes, signs and symptoms as well as treatment by Ayurveda or modern science.
Introduction
Panosteitis is a disease that commonly affects long bones of large breed dogs. This is also called growing pain in dogs, the condition is not that serious but is extremely painful and causes severe limping when bones start to grow. Panosteitis is a self limiting condition that means it can resolve on its own with time but as we discussed this is an extremely painful condition so it needs to resolve with medical assistance. Even though it is hard to evaluate that your dog is suffering from this, when you press the long bone of the leg then your puppy may cry or pull over his leg or may not use that leg in any activity.
Causes of Panosteitis
This condition is prone in large breed dogs of age between 12 to 24 months of age. Mid shaft is generally affected and leads to production of bone inside the bone marrow. Some experts say this condition developed due to increased intake of protein in their diet. Some say fatty marrow is replaced by fibrous tissue that shows fluffy blurriness in X Rays.

- Lameness in one or more limbs

How Ayurveda is better
Ayurveda is a good option for many pet owners who prefer a more natural approach to healthcare. Ayurveda focuses on using natural remedies to promote health and wellness, rather than relying solely on medications and surgery. Ayurvedic remedies can help to support the body’s natural healing processes and are not likely to cause side effects as modern medications. In the case of panosteitis, Ayurveda may offer some natural remedies that can help to alleviate the symptoms of the condition. For example, turmeric and ginger are both powerful anti-inflammatory herbs that can help to reduce pain and inflammation in the affected bones. Massage and heat therapy can also help to reduce pain. Additionally, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Planet Ayurveda also provides some herbal supplements to help the needful.
