Pranayama in Ild Along With Ayurveda Treatment
Abstract
Interstitial lung disease is a group of diseases, most of which causes scarring and inflammation of lung tissue. The main symptom of this disease is shortness of breath. The progression of this disease varies from person to person.
What is Ild?
ILD stands for Interstitial Lung Disease. Interstitial Lung Disease is a connective tissue disorder and a lung disease in which scarring of the Lung tissue occurs which is progressive in nature. This Lung scarring affects our ability to breath and ability to get enough oxygen into our bloodstream. Its exact cause is not known but it can be due to certain auto-immune diseases like – Rheumatoid Arthritis or can also be due to long term exposure to materials like
Symptoms
Shortness of breath and Dry cough. ILD is irreversible in nature. Allopathic medicines can also relieve its symptoms but cannot reverse the problem.
ILD According To Ayurveda
According to Ayurveda, when the imbalance occurs between the three energies, Vata, Pitta and kapha, disease occurs. Interstitial lung disease is a respiratory system disorder, and it is due to vitiation of “Pranavaha Srotas”. Signs and symptoms of this condition are associated with the Kapha dosha.
Pranayamas in Ild
Pranayamas or Breathing exercises adjuvant to medicine can give very good results in treating ILD. Pranayamas beneficial in ILD are as follows –
1. Kapalbhati
Sit comfortably on the ground or mat, with your spine erect. Place your hands on your knees and your palms should be open towards the sky. Now take a deep breath in and as you release the air and pull your stomach on exhale. Now pull your navel in back towards the spine and repeat it as much you comfortably can. You can feel the contraction of abdominal muscles by keeping your right hand on the stomach. Now as you relax the abdomen and navel, the inhaled air will flow into your lungs automatically. Do one round of Kapalbhati Pranayama by taking 20 such breaths and after that you can relax your body and perform another round for the same.

2. Suryabhedana
In this Pranayama, the person closes his left nostril with the help of a ring or using his right thumb and takes a slow and deep breath through his right nostril. Then the person closes his right nostril with the help of a ring or using his left thumb and takes a slow and deep breath through his left nostril. always keep in mind that exhalation should be longer than the inhalation. Repeat this cycle.

3. Bhramari
In this Pranayama, the person takes slow and deep breath in and during exhalation he makes the sound of a humming bee and feels the vibrations in his head. Repeat this cycle.

4. Nadishuddhi
In this Pranayama, the person closes his right nostril with the help of right thumb and then exhales through left nostril and then inhales through the same left nostril. The person then closes his left nostril with the help of a ring or little finger of the right hand and exhales slowly and completely through the right nostril. Repeat the rounds by alternating the nostrils.
