ABSTRACT
Progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis is also known as BYLER’S DISEASE is a congenital disease which is rare. It is an progressive disease normally from childhood but symptoms may start appearing by the age of two and rarely in adolescence. Its estimated incidence is 1 in 50,000 or 1 in 100000. Both men and women are equally affected. It results from Gene mutation and this condition gets worse with time. This condition is inherited as an autosomal recessive pattern. INTRODUCTION
As the name says Progressive – gradual developing, Familial – genetic (Same family genes), Intrahepatic- inside the liver, Cholestasis – Problem with excretion of bile. It is due to inherited molecular defects. In this condition the child is not able to drain the bile from the liver which develops gradually Also the liver cells find it difficult to produce and secrete bile. Due to this there is accumulation of the bile in the liver and body is not able to absorb fats and vitamins which leads to vitamin deficiency and more of waste material in bloodstream.There are FIVE types of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis.PFIC1, PFIC2, PFIC3, PFIC4, PFIC5. In these PFIC1, PFIC2, PFIC3 is the most seen one and PFIC4, PFIC5 are the rarest.

The main genes involved in this are
- ATP8B1 gene mutation – PFIC1
- ABCB11 gene mutation – PFIC2
- ABCB4 gene mutation – PFIC3
- TJP2 gene mutation – PFIC4
- NR1H4 gene mutation – PFIC5
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
- Jaundice (Yellowish discoloration of skin and conjunctiva)
- Pruritus (Itching severe)
- Poor weight gain
- Slow growth
- General debility
- Portal hypertension
- Splenomegaly (Enlarged spleen)
- Hepatomegaly (Enlarged liver)
- Deafness
- Malabsorption

1. YAKRIT PLIHANTAK CHURNA
It is a patent ayurvedic medicine by planet ayurveda in powder form which includes Bhumi Amla (Phyllanthus niruri), bhringraj (Eclipta alba), kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea) etc.. It has hepatoprotective properties, it is useful in fatty liver, liver cirrhosis and liver damage. It relieves inflammation and regenerates new liver cells. It promotes healthy spleen and liver and also promotes overall health.
DOSAGE – 1 tablespoon taken twice daily with plain water.
2. SANJIVANI VATI
It is an ancient ayurvedic medicine which is also manufactured by planet ayurveda in tablet form which consists of Haritaki(Terminalia chebula), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Vidanga (Emblica ribes), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) etc..
