Psoriasis

INTRODUCTION

This is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease caused by the immune system. Other types of psoriasis include plaque, guttate, pustular, and erythrodermic psoriasis. This disease can affect both children and adults of any age. Skin cells proliferate rapidly, and the immune system becomes overactive. Psoriasis’s underlying cause remains unknown. However, the cause could include both genetic and environmental factors.

SYMPTOMS

  • Psoriasis begins with red spots on the body. The dry, swollen, and inflamed patches are coated with silvery white flakes.
  • Inflamed patches appear more frequently on the scalp, elbows, knees, face, nails, palms, and soles.
  • Other symptoms could include pus-filled pain, itching, or a burning sensation. Joint pains, cracked and bleeding skin, dry scalp, male genital lesions, pale yellow nails, pus-filled blisters, and arthritis.

CAUSES

The primary cause of psoriasis remains unknown. It is more prevalent in adults than in children and affects both men and women equally. It is an immune-mediated disease, so immune responses played a significant role. T cell hyperactivity causes the epidermal layer of skin cells to grow rapidly, deregulating the inflammatory response. The production of cytokines increases. Blood vessels dilate. Thus, psoriasis is characterized by epidermal hyperplasia, and improper cell maturation results in immune cell infiltration. All of these factors contribute to the formation of silvery scales on the skin.

Types of Psoriasis

Psoriasis types can vary; a person may have one type for years before developing the second type. The cause and symptoms may vary by type. It is possible to have more than one type of psoriasis at a time. This can affect the nails and the epidermal layer. Sometimes it can be seen in rashes and blisters, and some are in the form of scaly plaques.

On the basis of these causes, the types of psoriasis are briefly explained below

1. Plaque Psoriasis

Symptom

  • It appeared as raised, inflamed red skin with silvery patches or scales.
  • This is typically an autoimmune disorder.
  • Sites: elbow, knee, sacrum, scalp, hand, and lower back.

2. Guttate Psoriasis

Symptom

  • Small papules appeared all over the body.
  • The cause is the streptococcal infection (genital, pharyngitis).
  • Site: arms, legs, and back.

3. Pustular Psoriasis

Symptom

  • This is a pus-filled blister surrounded by red skin.
  • This can be caused by the abrupt withdrawal of systemic steroids.
  • Site: Common on your hands and feet.

4. Inverse Psoriasis

Symptom

  • It is found in skin folds, particularly in sweating areas. The lesion looks glossy, smooth, and bright red.
  • This is most likely to affect obese people. The skin folds in the body more as one’s weight increases.
  • Site: armpits, navel, under the breasts, around the genitals

5. Erythrodermic Psoriasis

Symptom

  • This may appear to be burning. The cause might be sunburn, allergic reactions or the use of strong coal products.
  • It can be dangerous and cause fever and dehydration.
  • It requires immediate medical attention.
  • Site: all body

6. Nail Psoriasis

Symptom

  • The nail turned yellow-brown with chalky debris.
  • This is caused by an immune system malfunction. In people with psoriasis, new cells may move to the skin’s surface, resulting in a rash.

An Ayurvedic Overview of Psoriasis

Skin disorders in Ayurveda are referred to as Khustha-roga or twak rog. These expressions are related to a wide range of skin disorders, such as allergic reactions, rashes, and other changes in how the skin looks and behaves. Kushtha Roga (skin disorders) encompasses a wide range of skin conditions, including psoriasis. Psoriasis is similar to ek-khustha and kitbha-khustha. Psoriasis is defined as a chronic inflammatory skin disorder caused by an imbalance in the body’s doshas. Ayurvedic principles consider it a type of Kushtha, with the involvement of Pitta dosha in particular due to its association with heat, inflammation, and toxicity. One of the underlying causes of psoriasis, according to Ayurveda, is a lack of digestive fire (Agni). Low Agni levels indicate that the digestive system is failing to function, resulting in an accumulation of Ama, or undigested food particles and toxins in the body. These toxins travel through the bloodstream and affect the skin.

Ayurvedic treatment for psoriasis basically focuses on dietary modifications (Ahara) such as

  • To prevent further Pitta aggravation, hot, spicy, oily, and fermented foods, as well as alcohol and caffeine, should be avoided.
  • Follow the diet for Pitta-Pacifying such as Consume cool, anti-inflammatory foods to balance the Pitta dosha. This includes eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and moisturizing foods.
  • Also, one must take dietary precautions from the ayurvedic practitioner.

CONCLUSION

This autoimmune disorder is more common in obese people, those with cardiovascular disease, those with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and many other conditions. These people are more likely to develop psoriasis if they have other severe conditions. This skin disease causes inflammation, itching, burning, and pus-filled scaly patches. There is no perfect treatment for this.  Many people undergo topical and chemical treatments. However, high-dose drugs can cause side effects. This makes the situation more dangerous.  However, while this disease is lifelong, various treatments can help to improve one’s quality of life. The only way to prevent this disease is to maintain a healthy diet, lifestyle, and exercise. Sunlight contains vitamin D as well as UVA and UVB rays, making it a temporary cure for psoriasis. Some areas are difficult to treat.  Scalp psoriasis is often linked to hair loss.  There are numerous ointments and creams that may be useful for treatment. According to Ayurveda, psoriasis imbalances the Vata and Kapha doshas, and some Ayurvedic specialists believe that this is caused by toxins in the body, stress, and the heavy food we eat, such as seafood and salty foods, among other things. It has also been stated that milk should not be consumed with meat and fruits should not be consumed with water. These can be harmful and impair immune function.  Planet Ayurveda provides herbal supplements that have no side effects. They are made up of essential herbs that support the skin and immune cells.
