Sialadenitis and Sialadenosis Treatment With Herbal Remedies

ABSTRACT

Sialaden means salivary glands. Salivary glands are of two types. There are major salivary glands and minor salivary glands. Major salivary glands contain three pairs of glands that are Sublingual, Submandibular, and Parotid glands. There are hundreds of minor salivary glands. They are responsible for the production of saliva which aids in the digestion, and swallowing of food and is antibacterial in function. Sialadenitis and sialadenitis both are abnormalities of the salivary gland. Sialadenitis refers to inflamed (swelled) salivary glands whereas Sialadenosis is an enlargement of major salivary glands.

Sialadenitis and Sialadenosis

INTRODUCTION

Sialadenitis is a medical condition in which there is inflammation of one or more salivary glands. Parotid glands and submandibular glands are more prone to Sialadenitis. It is more common in adults than children. Depending upon the cause of Sialadenitis it can be contagious or non contagious. If Sialadenitis is due to some infection, it can spread through coughing, and sneezing whereas if a salivary gland stone is the cause of Sialadenitis then it is non contagious.

Similarly, Sialadenosis is another disease of salivary glands. Sialadenosis is a chronic, non-inflammatory, non-neoplastic enlargement of major salivary glands, especially the parotid gland. It can be idiopathic or due to obesity, alcohol consumption, liver disease, infection, etc. It is usually painless and bilateral. There are three types of Sialadenosis viz. AYURVEDIC OVERVIEW

According to the Ayurvedic Point of view, Sialadenitis and Sialadenitis are due to blockages in channels (stroto avrodh). It is due to reduced agni that causes the production of ama (toxins). Increased Kapha and ama in the body lead to obstruction of salivary glands. It causes inflammation and pain in the salivary glands. Its further aggravation leads to the involvement of Vata, Pitta and rakta (blood) causing symptoms like pain in the throat, fever, tenderness, and dry mouth in Sialadenitis. Sialadenosis can be painless or painful depending upon the doshas’ involvement. Sialadenitis and Sialadenitis can be managed with herbal remedies followed by gandusha (mouthwash), nasya (insufflation) and partisaran (local application).
