Dogs being beloved pets have the most attention from their owners. Unknowingly dogs get prone to many diseases that are fatal and hard to deal with. Hepatitis is such a fatal viral disease that affects dogs and compromises their body organs. Young dogs have a high mortality rate against this viral infection caused by the Canine virus. In this article, we will discuss the causes, symptoms, precautions, and ayurvedic treatment for hepatitis in dogs
Introduction
Hepatitis can occur in all dog breeds in different parts of the world, while the most common infected breeds of dogs are Labrador, Doberman, Springer Spaniels, Chihuahuas, etc.
Hepatitis in dogs is subdivided into two types
- Acute canine hepatitis infection – This is an acute form of hepatitis in dogs that manifest only for a few days. The symptoms may be slight and resolve within days of taking proper treatment.
- Chronic canine hepatitis infection –This chronic stage of hepatitis is very infectious and hard to cure, due to its spread and effects on different organs, and blood vessels of the body.
An infectious dog can spread the hepatitis virus through its fecal matter and urine for about six months, even after recovery.
Ayurvedic Aspect
As we all know the basic elements of the human body are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. Any imbalance in these doshas leads to body ailments. Liver diseases like Hepatitis are also a cause of such imbalance that occurs due to bad lifestyle and other agantuj (external) factors. The liver is very important for daily energy production and proper metabolism. Thus, proper treatment for the cure of Hepatitis is explained further in the article.
Causes
The Canine adenovirus is the causative factor for the occurrence of Hepatitis in dogs that can enter the dog’s body in various ways-
- By consuming feces
- Through the saliva
- Nasal discharge
- The urine of the infected dog.
As the dogs have the habit of licking and smelling the fecal matter as well as urine of their fellow dogs, thus the virus can easily spread to other dogs. When you take your pet out for a walk, you should be very careful that the pet must not get in contact with other street dogs and their fecal matter.
Also if your dog is infected with the hepatitis virus you must isolate the pet, so that the virus could not spread further. You should not allow your pet to have feces on the rods or in an open area. There should be a separate space for the defecation process of dogs that must be cleaned timely. These are some necessary steps to avoid the spread of such infectious diseases among dogs.

Treatment
Dogs with acute hepatitis can be treated successfully with the use of various medications while dogs with chronic hepatitis need monitoring and in severe cases, the treatment is done just to upgrade the dog’s quality life.
