VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY – CAUSES, SYMPTOMS & AYURVEDIC TREATMENT
ABSTRACT
Vitamins and minerals are essential micronutrients which are required by the body for various physiological functions. These micronutrients are not synthesized and produced within our body, so we have to take these vitamins and minerals from outside, through some organic sources. These organic micronutrients are divided into two categories.
Water soluble vitamins are – B complex (Riboflavin, biotin, niacin, thiamine, pyridoxine etc) and Vit C. Fat soluble vitamins are – A, D, E, K. They do not dissolve in water. Out of all these, today we will talk about vitamin D. Let’s have a look!
INTRODUCTION
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, which is not synthesized inside the body, it is provided from outer organic sources.
- Ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol are the chemical names for vitamin D
- It can be dissolved in fat
- It is required for the proper mineralization of bone
- Deficiency: This can lead to rickets and osteomalacia, or bone softening
- Sources to consider: The body produces vitamin D when exposed to UVB rays from the sun or other sources. The vitamin is also found in fatty fish, eggs and mushrooms.
