Vocal Cord Palsy and It’s Ayurvedic Treatment
Introduction
The two folds of tissue in your voice box known as the vocal cords are affected by vocal cord paralysis. The capacity to talk and even breathe can be compromised by vocal cord paralysis. That’s because your vocal cords, also known as vocal folds, are responsible for more than just sound production. They also protect your airway by preventing food, drink, and even saliva from passing into your windpipe and choking you. The vocal cord muscle will most likely become thin and weak as a result of nerve paralysis – the nerve impulses in the larynx (voice box) are disrupted, causing the vocal cord muscles to become paralysed. Damage to the brain might also cause it.
It can have a significant impact on the sufferer’s daily life, including employment, career choice, social contacts, and leisure activities. In Ayurvedic classics it’s described as Swara Bheda or Swara Kshaya. It is described by Master Sushruta as a state in which there is a clear change in the voice as revealed during speech and proclaiming with high or low pitch, inaudible or unmistakable sound. As a result of improper use of voice, the exacerbated Doshas invade and localise the vocal cords, causing modifications in the voice box’s functioning. The ability to talk is lost partially or completely as a result of this impairment.
What are the main causes and symptoms of vocal cord paralysis
Only one vocal cord is affected in most cases of vocal cord paralysis. It’s a rare but serious disorder when both of your vocal cords are paralysed. This can result in vocal difficulties as well as substantial breathing and swallowing difficulties. The following are some of the signs and symptoms of vocal cord paralysis: The voice has a breathy tone to it, hoarseness, breathing that is too loud, vocal pitch change, while swallowing food, drink, or saliva, you may choke or cough, inability to talk loudly due to the necessity to take numerous breaths while speaking, losing your gag reflex, coughing is ineffective, frequent clearing of one’s throat and so on.
Approximately half of the time, healthcare experts are unsure what causes vocal cord paralysis. Several ailments, injuries, and infections can cause vocal cord paralysis, including autoimmune diseases like Myasthenia Gravis, cancers like thyroid cancer, Marfan syndrome, Lyme disease, toxic substances like lead and mercury, neck, head & chest injuries and other trauma. Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke-related damages are only a few examples of neurological diseases.Thyroidectomy and mechanical ventilation are examples of surgeries which cause vocal cord paralysis. According to Ayurveda, voice with a high pitch, poisonous affliction, loud reading, laryngeal trauma, dosha imbalance in the throat, excessive consumption of cold beverages, curds, oils and fats, and so on causes Swara Bheda.
Ayurvedic remedies for Swara Bheda
Swarabheda Chikitsa involves scrupulously avoiding causative elements.
Kavala graham (mouth gargling / oil pulling), Nasya (nasal drops), and medicated herbal smoking help to clear the larynx locally (dhoomapana). The line of treatment is determined by the dominant Dosha. Herbs that can help with hoarseness of the voice include: Khadira – Acacia catechu (Removes phlegm that has built up in the buccal cavity), Maricha – Piper longum – Reduces morbidity and aids in the treatment of indigestion, Ela – Elettaria cardamomum (Relieves throat irritation), Shunti – Zingiber officinale (Aids in the relief of indigestion and phlegm) and so on.
